Goderich is that it's a waste to water lawns during the day
because it just burns off," Walker said. .
In fact, she said a typical home Lawn only needs an inch
of water a week to stay healthy.
"If you water too much, the grass roots won't grow deeper
and can get moldy. You want your roots as deep as
possible"
The watering bylaw came into effect in 2001, and since
that time, Walker saysshe's not aware of the town spilling
over its water pumping restrictions.
"We have not gone over since 200.1 that I'm aware of,"
Walker said Thursday.
The pump restrictions are set in place by the Ministry of
the Environment as a way to ensure all water released is
passed through treatment to the best of a water plant's
ability.
"If we go over the pump limit, we can get into trouble,"
Walker added.
The bylaw is one of about 20 or so that Bylaw Enforcement
officer Chris Bazden is watchful for. On a first offense,
Walker says a visit will take place between a rogue -waterer
and Enforcement Officer that includes tips to healthy
growth. A second offense means a fine.
"The main thing we want people to know is that there is
no need to water their lawns everyday," Walker adds. "'The
water is Just wasted
In the summer months, there is an increase in the
demand for water. Keep your lawn green and garden
growing by using more efficient watering practices:
OUTDOOR WATER TIPS:
• Water your lawn in the cool part of the day, either early
morning or early evening.
• Raise the blade level of your lawn mower to six to nine
centimetres.
• Give your grass 11/2 to 3 centimetres of water once per
week,
• Frequent watering encourages shallow root growth and
unhealthy grass.
• Don't apply fertilizer (nitrogen) in the summer d new
growth requires more water.
• Sweep sidewalks and driveways clean instead of using a
running hose.
• Avoid puddles and runoff when watering your lawn.
• Save water by xeriscaping.
• Use a trigger nozzle on your hose.
• Plant drought -resit trees and plants.
• Place a layer of mulch around tress and plants to slow the
evaporation of moisture and discourage weed growth.
