Blyth Gallery honours former local artist
to Manning, one of Canada's foremost printmakers, moved to
the Blyth area in 1987 where she became an active supporter and
member of the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. Although she now resides
to retirement in Victoria, BC, the gallery has decided to mount a
prospective exhibition honouring the artist and her work.
Manning has won many awards in Canada and abroad for
her etchings. 1 ler printmaking career started in 1960, but in
1980 while teaching, she became ill from exposure to etching
chemicals, so she turned to drawing in ink, and painting in
oil and water colours. The excellence of these paintings,
which were shown in many exhibitions and included in doz-
ens of private, government and corporate collections, have
added to her renown across Canada.
Since childhood, her favorite places have been forests and
meadows. She spent many solitary hours, drawing and photo-
graphing, collecting material to take back to the studio. The etch.-
ings and paint oftrees, fence posts and plants that resulted are
strongly constructed, with fine detail, and are presented as allego-
ries. This exhibition is a must -see for all area residents.
)o Manning -- a Retmspecdve" is presented by the Blyth Festival
Art Gallery and is co- ponsored by Ron and Bev Walker and Dun-
can and Lynda McGregor. The gallery also acknowledges the
assistance of The Art Exchange, London. It officially opens in the
Bainton Gallery (next to the Blyth Festival Box Office) on Friday,
July 22 at 6 p.ixt:
