yesterday to the sounds

Ships are such hit and

miss," Marshall said. "There are
ships operating all over the Great
Lakes, but most choose to stay on
the States side due to custom reg-
ulations and whatnot.
"We try to get the word out by
pulling out all of the stops for the
vessels that do visit port."
For the July 19 passengers,
those stops included complemen-
tary
P p
tary shuttle services to Goderich's
downtown core, with highlighted
attractions including beaches,
museum and golf. Their stopover
between noon and 9 p.m. on
Tuesday saw a handful of couples
take in :the sights and charm of
Goderich, including the half kilo-
metre shoreline boardwalk, bor-
dered end to end with ice cream.
Marshall said the cruisers of the
Grande Mariner included a well-
to-do, well-educated group of
world travelers who "are looking
for unique and world class" things
to see and do.
"We're lucky our port is the
closest to Stratford, where passen-
gers can take advantage of world-
class theatre."
But even Marshall admits it was
hard for him to wrap his head
around sending cruise passengers
straight out of our community at
first.
"We have lovely beaches and a
lovely community, so not all of the
passengers win take the day trip.
Some will choose to stay, but we
are somewhat geographically
challenged in that it's not that
easy for visitors to walk into our
downtown.
The port was host to another
small cruise liner in 2009, butdue to
a decline in economy and therefore
the number of passengers, no stops
were made to Goderich in 2010.
This year though, Marshall said the.
Blount vessel will make port at least
once more July 30 between 8 a.m.
and 6 p.m. Marshall encourages
both residents and visitors to stop
by the port and wave hello to visit-
ing cruisers, while checldrng.out the
small-scale luxury liner, however
tours. of the private vessel are not
available.
In the fall of 2010, the Grande
Mariner's captain toured Goderich
and Marshall said he was left with
a good impression.
"He was quite pleased," he said.
"It's a small ship, it only holds
about one hundred passengers,.
and doesn't require a major effort
to get into our port."
