Waking up earlier than most would
probably prefer for a Saturday morning,
a few dozen participants in the. local
Dash For Diabetes braved a possible
thunderstorm to do an eight kilometer
run. This is the ninth annual run here in
Goderich, which also happens to be the
only place in Canada to have this event.
The run .is clearly having an impact in
the area though, as Kincardine is now
following the example set by Goderich and
is starting their own run. This event was
co-founded by local men. Frank Gardiner
and Phil Paquette, is volunteer run, and
usually raises between three and four
thousand dollars. Any willing person can
participate no questions asked.
eight wheels makes her a force to be reckoned
with as part of the Forest City Derby Girls
roller derby team.
'A lot of people ask what roller derby is all
about," Fox, aka Anya, has said. "I always tell
people it's not the roller derby they used to
see on TV. There's no clotheslining, no
elbows:"
But, she added,"The hits you see on track
are real."
The bout July 9 will mark the second visit to
Goderich by the wheeled ones, and Fox said a
number of Huron County natives will hit the
track, including Carly Turford and Julie
Jemec.
In roller derby, an American -invented
sport, both teams play offense and defense at
the same time. Scorers called "jammers" race
around an oval track, winning points as they
lap members of the opposing team.. As a
blocker, Fox's job is to protect the jammer.
Following the bout July 9, the girls will be
back in August for another game in Goderich
when veteran team, the Thames Fatales, will
be taking on the Chicks Ahoy from Toronto.
"'This will feature Sara Peesker who is origi-
nally from Goderich playing on the Chicks
Ahoy," Fox said. "1 unfortunately will not be
taking part In the playing as 1 broke my ankle -
in the championship game in Ottawa two
weeks ago!'
Tickets are available now for The Superhe-
roes Vs. Supervillans match on July 9, and can
be purchased at Anstett Jewellers on the
Square in Goderich and It Was Yours, Now It's
Mine in Bayfield as well as online through

As for the upcoming match, Fox added the
girls have had a hot season, and it's expected
to get even better.
"We have been having a very successful
season, winning almost all of our games this
year and won the Canadian Womens Roller
Derby Assoo‘ation Tournament for Eastern
Canada: she said.
