Year book signing
Grade 12 GDCI students Jill Smith and Tori Walters engineered a yearbook signing party at the school
to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. All students were invited to participate in the signing,
making a small donation In the process. Smith researched several ct+arttabie organizations and decided
to donate the proceeds of $153 to the Cancer Society because a close relative has experienced cancer.
Heike Boettcher, a volunteer with the Sooty, accepted the donation.
You want the, washrooms
open, open your stores.
That was the challenge issued
to the Business. Improvement
Area by Coun. Kevin Morrison at
the June 27 meeting of Council.
BIA representative Cheryl
Dunn was before council, asking
them to reconsider opening the
washrooms in Courthouse Park
year round.
That was coupled witha
request to keep the tourist office
open year-round as well, and
keep more regular hours than it
has. Currently, it has a full-time
schedule from May to Septem-
ber, another set of hours stretch-
ing to Thanksgiving and a still
lessened schedule between
`thanksgiving and March Break.
"For five months of the year,
the booth is closed every holiday.
and weekend and an hour for
lunch," she said. "This is confus-
ing ,to
onfusing,to tourists and businesses."
"Is this an issue of washrooms;.
tourism or both?" asked Coun.
Morrison.
Dunn replied the two are
interconnected.
Morrison called on the BIA to.
lead by,exartnple, saying that
extending the hours of the
.downtown washrooms won't
work unless businesses are open
for people to go to.
"I agree" Dunn said. "But you
can't enforce (business
owners)
However, Coun. Judy Craw-
ford noted the need for
.accessible washrooms is the
main issue. Tourism Manager
Bob Marshall noted that in the
off season, there are very few
stops to the tourist booth after 5
p.m. and fewer still using -the
accessible washrooms.
By the numbers, he estimated
between $10-14,000 to keep the
office open year-round.
Because: town staff is union-
ized, it creates a problem of cost
to maintain 24/7 washroom
maintenance at the courthouse.
Even the smallest service call
.would stili cost the town for a
three-hour minimum.
By contrast, Parks Superin-
tendent Martin Quinn notedthe
Victoria Park washrooms are
fully accessible and open around
the clock, cleaned every morn-
ing and checked twice daily.
