Huron OPP Constables Jonathan Bergsma and Rob Walsh are two of six officers that will form the Ontario Provincial Police Traffic Management Unit in Huroyt. Patrols this summer will involve marine, off-road Vehicles, motor vehicle and bicycle patrols in communit ross the county. Bicycle patrols 1 c'‘ part of ['attic unit summer,duty With school out and summer activity in full swing, the Huron OPP Traffic Management Unit will be out in force with various directed patrols. Local officers will be conducting bicycle patrols in various communities across Huron this summer and the sly officers of the unit will also be visible throughout the county on all Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), conducting patrols in two unmarked cruisers, and a boat that will be active in marine patmls. The 'TprOfic Management Unit will be conducting specific patrols on bicycles targeting arnaller communities. "We have had the bikes for over 10 years but they have not been overly utilized," Const. Jonathan Bergsmarof the traffic unit said. *Cruisers are visible when we are on patrol but the use of bicycles and other means can be a very effective form of enforcement and visibility." Throughout the summer, the traffic unit will be conduct- in&patrols both day and night with a gold to increasing police visibility while conducting more versatile patrols. "This will provide increased visibility within the smaller communities and provide the opportunity for officers to interact with the general public and youth, Const. Leanne. Wilhelm said. "Given the versatility of the bicycles, accessibility through parks, back alleys and other area where officers are unable to conduct motor vehicle patrols will be increased." The OPP, Crime Stopper and Mac's have partnered together with a program called 'Operational Freeze* allow- ing officers to reward cyclists with a 'Free Prostcr 'from Mac's for having proper bicycle equipment and following the rules of the road as set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
