With school out and summer activity in full swing, the
Huron OPP Traffic Management Unit will be out in force
with various directed patrols.
Local officers will be conducting bicycle patrols in
various communities across Huron this summer and the sly
officers of the unit will also be visible throughout the county
on all Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), conducting patrols in two
unmarked cruisers, and a boat that will be active in marine
patmls.
The 'TprOfic Management Unit will be conducting specific
patrols on bicycles targeting arnaller communities.
"We have had the bikes for over 10 years but they have
not been overly utilized," Const. Jonathan Bergsmarof the
traffic unit said. *Cruisers are visible when we are on patrol
but the use of bicycles and other means can be a very
effective form of enforcement and visibility."
Throughout the summer, the traffic unit will be conduct-
in&patrols both day and night with a gold to increasing
police visibility while conducting more versatile patrols.
"This will provide increased visibility within the smaller
communities and provide the opportunity for officers to
interact with the general public and youth, Const. Leanne.
Wilhelm said. "Given the versatility of the bicycles,
accessibility through parks, back alleys and other area
where officers are unable to conduct motor vehicle patrols
will be increased."
The OPP, Crime Stopper and Mac's have partnered
together with a program called 'Operational Freeze* allow-
ing officers to reward cyclists with a 'Free Prostcr 'from
Mac's for having proper bicycle equipment and following
the rules of the road as set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
