Const. Garrett Styles, 32, would die en route to hospital that morning leaving a wife and two young children, the youngest only nine weeks old, to grieve his unfortunate and senseless death. Following in the footsteps of a proud police family, Const. Styles worked the job that he knew so well and loved. His is the sad story of the unfortunate perils of police work. MucItof the job can be rudimentary and routine, often helping stranded motorists or responding to calls to quell a domestic situa- tion or participate in programs aimed at get- ting drinking drivers and speeders off our roads. Like other jobs, shifts can start to take on: a sameness and a semblance of routine. But on those rare occasions, when our police, firefighters and paramedics are faced with a dangerous situation, we expect them to be there for us. We know they will be there for us. Just as Const. Styles pulled over a minivan and was apparently about to pull the keys out of the ignition of a vehicle driven by an unli- censed I5 -year-old driver. He was dragged hundreds of metres and pinned under the vehicle after it veered off the road. He bravely radioed for help, indicated that others may be hurt, while he lay pinned and dying. "We ask a lot of our police officers. We ask them to uphold our laws, protect our homes and, if need be, put our safety Before theirs. Our police, and their families, agree to protect us and ours knowing that doing so may mean paying the ultimate sacrifice.." Premier Mcruinty said. Communities owe so much to the selfless service of those that protect and serve and sometimes we lose sight of the courage and dedication of those who choose to serve. The last York Regional Police'Officer killed in the line of duty was Det. -Const. Rob Plun- kett, lumkett, from the Auburn are -,In July 2007. Plun- kett, the father of three and married to Goderich native Sonja Lapaine, was working with a surveillance team investigating the theft of airbags when he was pinned against a tree by.a driver trying to escape .in a stolen vehicle. ' The accused was found guilty of the lesser chane of manslaughter and sentencing of our years was handed down last week. Bach new day can bring new dangers to those who serve and protect. We owe them so much. DS • ..• the Goderich Coor4ho05e t&L i ( oue W.T. F. GAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG? Graporliii letters to the editor We need wind energy jobs and tax dollars To the editor, Stop and think economics! Stop and think! Wind turbines would create a tax revenue of nearly $3,500/turbine per year. There are 100 turbines sited for the combined projects of Summerhill and Twenty Two Degrees, meaning there will be $350,000.00 per year coming into our municipality from these turbines, not including fees for building permits. Also consider the amount that each farmer will receive individually. Everyone knows that if you give a farmer a.dollar, he'll spend two, putting more money Into our local community. • In this area we have experienced large industries closing down and moving away (such as Volvo and Wescast, just to name a couple). People are left without jobs, striving to find ways to make ends meet to keep their" home or family farm, to pay their bills and to keep their ever rising taxes paid on time, Meanwhile, these ever -rising taxes are supporting new fire halls, a new arena and a new;ItEACI:I centre (Regional Equine. and Agricultural Centre of Huron inc) driving taxes through the roof. Some councilors are fighting a solution to their tax burden and depriving local residents of a much-needed source of income ... Wind Turbines! industry has developed in our area from the wind turbines and the turbines aren't even In our local area yet. There is a com- pany in Goderich called Composotech Structures which builds and repairs wind turbine adesf.'There will also be one pre- ventative aintenaitce person per six turbines and in the winter there will be people employed to remove snow from the laneways for this preventative maintenance. Crane operators will be employed to remove and replace parts on wind turbines and the preventative maintenance vehicles will need service and repairs regularly. The benefits to the local economy just keep snowballing. What about while they are being con- structed? There will be gravel truck drivers, hyhoe operators, cement truck companies, bulldozer operators and other local Ontario construction trades employed. We could make a list a page long. We need the jobs in our community. We need the tax dollars in our area. We need to stop driving wind turbine companies away. We need to support wind farming in our area! . Another common misconception is that wind power costs 50.80 per kilo e same as solar. This is not true! n energy costs $0,135 per kilowatt and rooftop solar. costs $0.80 per kilowatt. At prime peek time, we pay $0.099 per kilowatt. It seems funny that some of our municipal councilors are complaining about wind power prices at $0.135 per kilowatt while those same councilbrs have solar panels and are being paid $0.80' per kilowatt. How can they com- plain when they are profiting from the higher amount? Makes you think, doesn't it? - Bob Watkins Paul Gibbings Kevin Wright Members of S.A.C.
