"And we are making Progress," he said. He said with education and treatment, an impact is being made. One is that if women's sexuality in Africa wasn't under assault, if women were able to say no,, if women weren't subject to predatory attacks by men, or preda- tory behaviour generally, then you would have a. disease in Africa called AIDS. But you wouldn't have a pandemic. 'We know how to defeat this pandemic," he says, "We have all the knowledge we need. But to do it there must be a quan- tum leap in financial resources." Lewis blames wars around the world. for many of the problems and says the money spent on wars could cure so many diseases. He says a lack, of will on behalf of governments is an issue and if this were truly a priority, a lot of problems such as hunger and disease could be solved. lie says he loves the Rotary Club for their work around the world and their fight against Polio. "This business of sexual violence is out of control in many parts of the world. Very few talk about it." Lewis said no one seems to know how to stabilize the merciless violence against women. He spoke of the child headed households as the result of the deaths of so many women and that if it was not for the grand- mothers, he wouldn't know how many of the children would survive. Lewis is renowned for his incredible determination to improve the plight of those who are less fortunate. But what truly sets him apartis his eloquence and passion. "Hearing Stephen Lewis is an experience you will always remember," says Ciufo. "He peaks with incredible power, with words that go right to your heart. Despite the seriousness of his subject, he can suddenly lift the audience with his marvelous sense of humout" Ciufo said he was incredibly inspiring and poten- tially life changing for those present. 'His charisma, his presence, his energy moves the audience." Ciao says he lays out the facts and then asks why do these things happen. He says the proms of the world are staggering and Lewis inspires you to do something. "Those two kids are "Ttuning the Tide -they are saving the lives of children in Africa," said Ciufo. After Lewis's presentation, one woman said his speech was moving. "Lots has. been done, but there is much more to be done. I left feeling mixed, sad for all the things wrong in the world." She said she is pleased the Rotary Club has made huge changes in third world countries, but "overwhelmed with not being able to help." As always, in his speeches, Lewis attempted to set everything in the broad context of human rights, and was able to argue that civil society has emerged as the fundamentalsocial agent to secure those rights. "We can't give up, we have to do something says Ciufo. Weare blessed: -we are not powerless. He just gets to you." The sponsors, including premier sponsors, the Avon Maitland District School Board, NextEra Energy Canada, and the Grand Bend Community Founda- tion were crucialto this event in many ways; most notably: they provided th e opportunity for nearly 100 students to attend.
