Local man to walk in
support of Alzheimer's
Jim Finkbeiner has never been one to
run from challenges.
And now, as he faces one of the biggest
challenges of his life, he's planning on
taking it all in stride.
January is Alzheimer's Month and Fink-
beiner is going to walk the nine kilometre
mute from Exeter to Huron Park, Jan. 2
to help raise awareness and funds for the
Alzheimer Society of Huron County.
The staff at the Alzheimer Society of
Huron County is planning to walk by his
side as a symbol of the work they do.
"When Jim told us of his plan, we all
agreed it was important for us to support
him by not only talking the talk but also
by walking the walk," Cathy Ritsema,
Executive Director said. "This is what
we do. We walk with our families from
diagnoses through their journey. We offer
support and education at every stage."
Diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in
early March 2009, and not 65 at the time,
Finbeiner and his wife, Linda, have been
working hard at continuing their life as
normally as possible. When asked about
how they deal with the disease, Jim's re-
sponse is, "sure I know one day I will get
worse and I will forget where I atn and
who you are, but that isn't today."
Jim is making this journey not only to
raise awareness of this disease but also
in hopes of promoting and getting more
people participating in the 2010 Manu -
life Walk for Memories held on Jan. 23
in Goderich at the Maitland Recreation
Centre YMCA at 10 a.m.
This event will mark the fifteenth walk
for the Alzheimer's Society and last year's
edition raised more than $29,000 at the
county's five walk locations.
If anyone would like to sponsor Jim on
his walk, donations can be made to the
Alzheimer Society Account at the United
Communities Credit Union in Exeter at
519-235-0640.
You can also join the walk at the Exeter
Firehall at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 2. The group
expects to reach Huron Park at 2 p.m.
