HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-12-30, Page 25Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - Page 25 Recapping Goderich's school successes of 2009 VIKINGS The GDCI Senior Boys Volleyball team won the Tier -2 Division at the Fanshawe College Overkill Tournament this September. The Vikes also won a consolation championship in Chatham -Kent, as well as their annual Viking Invitational. The Senior boys Vikings volleyball team took silver for the season at both Huron -Perth and WOSSAA. The boys played St. Mike's and Westminster Secondary respectively. After 20 years, 2009 marks the return of wrestling to GDCI. After just three tournaments, the team has an impressive 11 medals combined. Tyler Durst was first in pole vault and went on to take fifth place at OFSAA. Coy Kulich took a second place in javelin and a fifth in discus. Laura Walker placed third in the 1,500 metre, and second in the 3,000 metre. Sister Leslie placed fourth in the 3,000m. Shawn Dawson and partner Josh Ban took gold in men's doubles at GDCI's invitational tennis tournament June 4. The GDCI Vikings field hockey defence held strong for another grrat season on the pitch. The Vikes finished shy of OFSAA this year, though they enjoyed an unbeaten regular season as Huron -Perth champions as well as placed second at WOSSAA. Field hockey alumni Shannon Vance and Katie Feagan are now playing varsity for York and UWO respectively. . The GDCI Junior Girls Basketball team finished second in Huron -Perth this year with a narrow 33-37 loss to St. Mike's of Strafford. The senior Vikings fin- ished fifth in league play. Earlier, the GDCI Senior Girls battled short-handed • Summer summary The Jeremy Austin Memorial Mosquito Tourna- ment may have been delayed by rain, but it didn't stop Delaware from mopping up Listowell 17-2 in the final match. The 10 -team tournament featured a mostly -local lineup. The Listowell Legionaire Peewees took first place at the 2009 Ray Ducharme Memorial Peewee Base- ball Tournament July 21. The Goderich Oldtimers' ladies slo-pitch team swept the Goderich Women's Slo-Pitch final tourna- ment, taking the title of 'A' champions after routing TTK. The Babes took the 'B' spot and Boston Pizza topped the 'C' division. The Goderich Oldtimers placed a heart -breaking second in their 29th annual tournament June 6. The loss was close, 1-0 against Windsor Caboto. Goder- ich also beat Toronto and Exeter 1-0 on their way to the silver. For the first time in years, the Oldtimers soccer team took home the coveted Hanover Cup, after a heated match with hometeam Hanover. Goderich dominated the game in a 2-0 win. The Goderich Tempest U 11 girls soccer team claimed the West Middlesex Youth Soccer League championship August 23, defeating Lucan 3-0. The Gardiner Peewee Seahawks travelled to Flesherton to win a single -elimination tournament August 16, playing nearly six hours of non-stop baseball! The Goderich Junior Rookie 1 team took first place for their 2009 season, sweeping their year-end tournament in Mitchell. The team's record was 12- 2-2. The Goderich Orioles claimed the `BB' champi- onship in the annual Brussels Tigers' Fastball Tour- , nament, The Orioles borrowed from the Goderich Gators' bench for the tournament 1011.1i . 3 FIRST PLACE - MALE GODERICH TRIATHLON 1:56:03 MARK LINSEMAN to take the St. Anne's Eagles Basketball Tournament in Oc- tober. EAGLES The St. Anne's Eagles girls swim team took fust place over- all at WOSSAA, and the school took second overall. Correena Otten set a new record in the senior girls 100 me- tre backstroke at 1:14.81 - nearly four seconds faster. In April, the St. Anne's Eagles swim team came in eighth place out of 267 schools in Ontario. St. Anne's sent three teams to OFSAA cross-country finals this fall, after excpetional performances at the Huron -Perth and Western Ontario (WOSSAA) winais. The school sent 18 runners to OFSAA where the se- nior and junior girls placed 7th in Ontario. The senior boys came in 14th. SPARTANS The Huron County Chess Championships were host- ed and swept by St. Mary's School. St. Mary's placed first in all eight elementary school divisions. The St. Mary's Spartans were the overall champions at the Huron -Perth Catholic cross-country meet. GODERICH PUBLIC Robertson Memorial was the regional champion at the el- ementary school track meet May 20. Colborne and Brookside took second and third. Goderich Public School took the overall title at the annual Wawanosh cross-country meet October 8.
