PLAYGROUND
The Goderich Lions Club mustered
the support of the provincial and mu-
nicipal governments for upgrades to
Harbour Park this summer. The final
approvals were passed at council ear-
lier this month, and work is expected
to begin in the spring.
BUTT OUT
The YMCA and the Maitland Rec-
reation Centre took a stand against
tobacco this year, banning smoking
from the MRC parking lot, sports
fields and sidelines.
BY THE NUMBERS
Goderich Minor Hockey numbers
were slightly down this year, with 270
kids and 14 teams in addition to house
and development league teams.
Registration numbers for Goderich
Minor Soccer were down this year,
with 29 local teams and two London
Youth teams. About 400 players reg-
istered this year, down about 80 from
the year before.
Summer program attendance at
the YMCA was up 216 from 176 in
2008.

CHANGING COURSE
The Dash for Diabetes changed its
course this year, moving from Port
Albert to the streets of Goderich.
OLYMPIC FEVER
Valerie McLeod, assistant manager
at Goderich McDonalds, is heading
to Vancouver this winter for the 2010
Olympic Games.
McLeod was nominated by her co-
workers for her motivation and good
spirit.
She will be working in the Olym-
pic Village.
REMEMBERING MARJ
Little Bowl held its first Marj
Moore Invitational Tournament this
year, held in memory of the woman
who dedicated much of her life to the
development of young bowlers.
The best league bowlers all partici-
pated in the tournament, which also
raised funds for the Kids' Booster
Club.
OF NOTE
Joe and Joe O'Keefe, know a thing
or two about family. The father -and -
son duo both qualified for the 2009
Boston Marathon and ran the entire
race together.
Two other local running veterans -
Steve Beasley and Phil Paquette - ran
this year's marathon of marathons as
well.
Beasley had a third-place finish and
a negative split, running the last half
of the race with a faster time, coming
in at 2:46:41. Both O'Keefes finished
at 3:40:03 and Paquette at 3:40:58.
All qualified for 2010.
WHAT A SHOT!
Clayton Boyce scored a hole -in -
one on No. 6 at Maitland Country
Club June 13.
SHUFFLE OFF TO ST. MARYS
Hall -of -Fame inductee Al Weeks
came in fourth at the Ontario Shuffle-
board Association Singles tourna-
ment in St. Mary's this June.
Weeks was inducted in to the On-
tario Shuffleboard Hall of Fame July
2009

PONY UP
The Lake Huron Pony Club opened
early in the New Year, offering youth
aged 6-21 the opportunity to learn
about horses and proper riding.
In January of this year, organizer
Helen Watson put out the call for.
members, and in its first year the
pony club has already grown into a
10 -member organization, with more
on the way for 2010.
TWO-TIMER
Rosemarie Evans won the Owen
Sound District OLGA Double Dia-
mond Championship August 16 at
the Blackhorse Golf Club - her sec-
ond win in as many years.
GOOD TRY
John Rutledge scored the GDCI
Junior Boys Rugby team's first try
April 24 against Mitchell.
SPIKED
Nineteen local teams participated
in the annual Goderich Co-ed Volley-
ball League's year-end tournament.
The Cubs and Cougars won the
day, followed by the Go -Getters and
Team Ramrod.
DANCE OFF
On June 6, the Casablanca Com-
petitive Team took first place at the
Junior Youth Talent Search prelimi-
naries in Clinton.
Between the Stratford Performing
Arts Festival and Hamilton Dancef-
est, the team took home five firsts and
one second place finish.
HOMELESS
The Goderich Touch Football
League (GTFL) may be no more,
but their presence continues to be felt
on the gridiron, with the Goderich
Fighting Eagles and GTFL Heroes
now playing in the London Football
League.
The Heroes placed first in the men's
'B' regular season standings, while
the Fighting Eagles took second in
the 'C' division season.
