Goderich Signal Star debuted 2009's
first of many articles about the loom-
ing H1N1 minas expected to hit Ontario hard
through cold and flu season. At the time, local
hospitals and mecCical clinics initiated passive
surveillance at entrances asking visitors to
wash their hands on entering and exiting the
facilities.
The World Health Organization raised its
pandemic level to Phase 6- the highest lev-
el- on June 11. The announcement indicated
the globe had entered a pandemic situation,
and the HIN1 flu visas had caused sustained
community -level outbreaks in at least two
WHO regions. The Huron County Health
Unit received lab conformation in late June
of the first two cases of the H1N1 flu virus
in county residents. The HU reported June 19
that its first confirmed case affected an adult
with underlying medical conditions: The sec-
ond affected patient, confirmed June 22, was
said to have come into contact with someone
diagnosed with the H1N1 flu virus. At the
time, there had been over 2,000 confimmed
cases' across the province.
Canada's chief public health officer recom-
mended that pregnant women, young chil-
dren, health care workers and the chronically
ill under 65 be first in line for the H1N1 flu
shot. The basic approach was to ensure that
those who need it most get it first, Dr. David
Butler -Jones said at a news conference in Ot-
tawa on Sept. 16.
The first wave of the much talked -about
H1N1 vaccine became available to Goderich
and Huron County residents on Oct. 26, dur-
ing the first of more than 20 priority clinics
taking place over a six-week stretch. Things
got a little rocky in November, when the prov-
ince faced a vaccine shortage from supplier
Olaxo$mith Kline.
