A mine of headlines
e Goderich Sifto Salt
Mine began 2009 cel-
ebrating its Golden
Anniversary, and the operation
held its fair share of headlines
through the year.
The mine celebrated 50 years
of continuous mining operations
in the Town of Goderich, and
mine manager Roland Howe
said in February that salt re-
serves are able to support min-
ing at the location for years to
come. Since 2006, Sifto has an-
nounced two major investments
at the Goderich mine totaling
$85 million, which was said to
increase capacity to more than
9 million tons per year by 2012.
In . February, it was reported that
473 workers were employed at
the facility, and that too was ex-
pected to rise by 2012.
Effective April 1, a new three-
year contract was signed by
unionized employees of Sifto
Corporation, Compass Miner-
als Limited. The deal called for
an increase to the average wage
of four per cent in the first year,
and three per cent in each of the
remaining years. It was the first
time in many years that an early
deal was struck between the
company and union— an indica-
tion that relations have improved
significantly since the strike of
2006.
At Goderich Town Council's
April 6 meet, the site -plan was
approved for Sifto to proceed
with a new 70,000 square -foot
building to be erected on Sifto
property at the Goderich har-
bour.
It was all fun and games that
just might save a life in May
when Goderich hosted- a three -
team, two-day Mine Rescue
competition, won by the Cana-
dian Gypsum Corporation team
from Hagersville. Sifto Salt
and Windsor Salt teams put up
their best stuff during the event
held at the Memorial Arena that
saw each team work their way
through mock emergencies, in-
cluding an underground vehicle
collision and CPR rescue.
Ontario Minister of Labour
Peter Fonseca joined Mine
Manager Rowland Howe, Hu-
ron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell,
Compass Minerals CEO An-
gelo Brisimitzakis and Goderich
Mayor Deb Shewfelt for an in-
side look the underground facil-
ity in July. Fonseca was in town
to announce an Ontario safety
blitz that will focus on electrical
hazards in mining operations.
Fonseca said Goderich was cho-
sen to make the announcement
because of its model health and
safety practices.
In a tragic turn of events, just
before midnight on August 25,
mine worker Murray Nesbitt
was killed when he was swept
into a mound of salt at the Sifto
Salt Mine. Nesbitt was working
on a high mound of salt in an
excavator when the hydraulics
in the machine malfunctioned.
"We are deeply saddened by the
loss of Murray Nesbitt. He was
a friend and colleague whose
experience and leadership was
valued by all who worked with
him," Sifto Salt Mine Manager
Rowland Howe said.
End of an Era
The final motor grader
off the assembly line
at Volvo's Goderich
manufacturing facility was
turned over to the County of
Huron on June 30. The spe-
cial edition Volvo G960 was
presented to Warden Ken Oke
at a ceremony at the Volvo
Aquatic Centre at the YMCA.
The last grader marked the
end of more than 100 years of
grader manufacturing in God-
erich, where the world's first
motorized grader was built.
The company will now pro-
duce motor graders at the Vol-
vo Road Machinery facility in
Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.
On Wednesday, July 8, .the
Signal -Star debuted its 27th
edition of 2009. It's quality
stock pages held an 8 -page
pull out section dedicated to
the last days of grader manu-
facturing in Goderich as most
of the operations at the Vol-
vo plant on Maitland Road
wrapped up. The final road
grader to come off the assem-
bly line passed by on June 25.
