Ggovernments coming to -
ether for the benefit of
all was the theme of a
mid-February funding Blitz that saw
more than $53 million handed out to
municipalities in the Huron -Bruce
riding. Conservative MP Ben Lobb
and Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell trav-
elled the length of the county Feb. 14,
handing out the first batch of cheques
for the Build Canada Fund communi-
ties component.
It brought the total amount of
government spending in the riding
to $56 million during its fiscal year.
Goderich's share of the dough was
$751,000 for wastewater infrastruc-
ture use. The money was put toward
the purchase and installation of a new
ultraviolet disinfectant system at the
Goderich Pollution Control Plant— a
project estimated at $800,000. The
County of Huron also received $1.5
million for road infrastructure.
In March, business and community leaders put their
heads together in light of a 'massive' funding announce-
ment from the federal government.
The Southwest Economic Alliance (SWEA) a group
created to promote economic growth in the region,
looked to the feds for details about how $1 billion dollars
in funding would be spent. The amount was announced
at the end of January by the Southern Ontario Develop-
ment Agency, and encompassed rural areas including
Huron and Bruce Counties, along with urban centres like
London, Kitchener and Waterloo.
April saw MPP Carol Mitchell doling out $300,000
worth of Communities in Transition funding from the
Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The al-
lotment was intended to help communities research, re-
tain and rebound from job loss, including those that have
seen larger employers shut down operations. Mitchell
pointed to Exeter, after its loss of Can -Gro, Westcast in
Wingham, and Volvo in Goderich.
The 18th annual Goderich
Triathlon welcomed more than
125 participants to the Goderich
waterfront on August 16. The event
saw the lakefront transformed into
a grueling test of endurance.
In Goderich, the funding was said
to be heading toward the H20 High-
way, with studies and pre -planning
for necessary developments at the
harbour.
Both Mitchell and Lobb were back
in Goderich June 29 when they an-
nounced $223,352 in funding for
the restoration of the Lions Har-
bour Park bandshell and new facil-
ity washrooms. The Goderich Lions
Club pledged $100,000 toward the
project, and the Town of Goderich
will pick up the tab for the remain-
ing $123,352 in the joint federal -pro-
vincial -municipal funded work. The
project is slated to begin in March,
2010. These were just some of the
big funding announcements of '09.
New laws
0 n Jan. 21, smokers were
forced to butt -out while
riding in cars with pas-
sengers 16 -years -old and younger, or face a hefty fine.
A new law in 2009 levied a $250 fine against any person
caught smoking with children present.
In 2009, the Province of Ontario got tougher with drink-
ing drivers when they introduced new impaired driving
laws that took effect May 1. Any driver caught with a
blood-alcohol level between 0.05 to 0.08— referred to as
the warning range— would have their license suspend-
ed for three days. If the driver is caught a second time
within the range, their license would be suspended for
seven days, and the driver would be required to attend an
alcohol education program. If by chance the driver was
caught a third time, the penalty is a 30 -day suspension
and remedial alcohol treatment program, along with an
ignition interlock system for six months. Previously, any
motorist caught with a blood-alcohol level below 0.08
was subject to a 12 -hour license suspension.
