The Goderich Signal -Star presents just a sample of the most memorable
news stories, accomplishments and images from 2009.
The following appears in no particular order.
Anniversary celebrations
In
a solemn testament to the service given by Huron
County's Naval officers,: the Royal Canadian Naval As-
sociation of Huron led the Battle of the Atlantic Parade
for the last time. In its 63rd year, the parade and service was
hosted on Goderich's waterfront on April 26 with just three
RCNA Huron members remaining.
Community Living of Central Huron had a couple of reasons
to celebrate on April 24. The organization raised a new flag at
their Suncoast Drive headquarters to commemorate their 50th
anniversary year. They also planted a tree in observation of
Arbour Day. The organization has been ensuring all people
live in a state of dignity,: sharing in all elements of living in the
community since 1959.
One of Goderich's largest employers and community staple,
McGee Motors celebrated 80 years in business in 2009. The
auto dealership has had a colourful history in town, one cen-
tred around the community and one which has made them one
of Goderich's largest and longest employers to date.
It was a time to look back with family and friends on May
30 as Victoria Public School celebrated 99 years of education-
al excellenrc in Goderich. Current students at VPS marked
the day with a round of Learning For Tomorrow, the school's
anthem.
The history of St. Peter's Catholic Church and its role in
the community came to life June 26-28 as part of the church's
175th anniversary celebrations. A walkabout theatre experi-
ence penned by Warren and Eleanor Robinson took to the
streets for an 11 -scene celebration of the parish.
The Huron String School celebrated their 25th anniversary
at A Concert in The Parkin Goderich in July. The string school
began as Central Huron String School in the fall of 1984 with
about 20 student members.
As the Royal Bank of Canada prepared to celebrate 100
years of managing Goderich's money, the .branch underwent
extensive changes to both its interior and exterior. The new
look took a page out of history for the bank, incorporating de-
signs consistent with the heritage architecture of The Square.
The Children's Theatre celebrated 25 years of young stars
on stage in January.
The Goderich Mariners Service honoured ships and sailors
for the 95th time Feb. 22 at Knox Presbyterian Church.
A new town web site
After spending much of 2008 on the back burner, the
town's desire to revamp its online presence hit its
stride in 2009.
In January the Community Development Partnership Com-
mittee once again began accepting requests for proposals for
a new town web site. In May, E -Solutions, a Waterloo based
web design and marketing company was named creator for the
new Goderich.ca.
Goderich officially launched its new web site on Sept. 11
putting to rest a two-year effort for an updated e -presence. The
site is now the first stop for both residents and visitors looking
for information on anything to do with the town.

The theatre, the theatre
The theatre community put on its best Oliver in early
2009, asking the town for $50,000 for urgent repairs.
The request to council was received Nov. 08.
The sagging roof gave way to both animals and elements,
said GLT president Stehpanie Scholten. Total cost of repairs,
she said, was estimated at $100,000.
At the March 30 meeting of Town Council, Scholten said
the GLT has reached a crossroads as The Livery faced repairs
beyond its capacity. At that time, repairs were on hold while
the .GLT and council awaited the completion of a theatre vi-
ability report.
On May 20, the GSS reported that a preliminary feasibility
study to examine the prospect of developing a performing arts
centre _ in the core of Goderich suggests the project is more
than viable. The town commissioned the theatre facility needs
assessment in 2008 to examine the possibility of developing a
performing arts centre in Goderich. The town had authorised a
memorandum of understanding in 2006 between the town and
Goderich Little Theatre, owners and managers of the Livery.
In August, Goderich Town Council purchased three lots
along South and Stanley Streets behind the Livery from
KPMG - an insolvency trustee for Hdron Tract Holdings - for
$301,000. Now owned by the town,: are 49-53 South Street,
34-42 Stanley Street and 44 Stanley. Street. The area covers
the parking lot behind the Livery as well
as the adjoining property, once occupied
by the old Gardiner's shed. If the town's
push for a new arts centre were to become
a reality, Mayor Deb Shewfelt said the
Livery would need its current parking lot
for expansion, leaving only street parking
for patrons.
