High school fields first
wrestling team in decades
Early successes a
throwback to GDCI's
wrestling roots
After a 20 -year hiatus, wrestling has
returned to Goderich District' Colle-
giate Institute. Back in the latter half
of the 20th century, GDCI was the
dominant football and wrestling school
in the Huron -Perth Board, and now, in
the 21st century, a small but dedicated
squad is reviving the tradition.
After three tournaments, the team
has won eleven medals, competing
against seasoned competition from
London -area schools. According to
coach Steve Lindstrom, the squad has
a legitimate chance of sending several
wrestlers to WOSSAA, and perhaps
further. Leading the squad is senior
Gary Lynch, who boasts two golds, a
silver, and seven pins in nine matches.
Talented tenth -grader Myles Frasier,
wrestling at 62 kilograms, has claimed
two silvers and a gold, and Grade 9
Keisha Stoddart has won a bronze and
a gold in two tournaments. Emily Hog-
garth, Jamie Johnston, and Alex Hoy
have taken home silver for GDCI.
Their next competition is the Viking
Invitational at A.B. Lucas High School
on January 9.
