Kettle -Campaign nears $43,000 goal Gerard Creams signal -star staff Wednesday, December 23 marks the last day in the Salvation Army's 2009 Kettle Campaign, and as of Monday, the goal of $43,000 was well within reach. "We've got three more days left and right now our total is $37,583," said Captain Krista Andrews. "We have basically $5,500 to do in the next three days and we are very confident that we will reach our goal this year." Not dancing around the point, Andrews said the suc- cess of the kettle campaign can be directly attributed to a caring, responsive community. "We have a wonderful community that is sensitive to the needs of others and responds when needed," she said. "People are so aware of those needs, those who can give more are giving much more." After a year of economic hardship and job loss, Andrews said there was a public perception that things would be tougher for the campaign. However, she said the aver- age donation is larger than in years past. "So many volunteers are saying, 'I'm so surprised what people are giving.'" she said. "Therewas a time when toonies were the normal donation, This year, five dollar bills is what we're getting the most of." Funds raised through the kettle campaign fund the Salvation Army's Family Services for the coming year. Andrews said there was no shortage of volunteers to help man the kettles throughout Goderich. Trinity Christian Reform, Goderich Ro- tary Club, Vanastra Lions, the Goderich Legion, Clinton and Goderich Thrift Stores, Knights of Columbus, St. George's Angli- can, ACW Township, First Baptist, Bethel Pentecostal, Walmart staff and Knox Pres- byterian Church each took a day on the kettles and for many of the groups, it was their first time. Andrews said the time spent on the kettles is invaluable. "I don't think people realize the impact . they make when they sponsor a day," she said. "We weren't asking people to give us money - just their time." errlj ark''Tarn Wishing you a bundle of glad tidings this Christmas! ...from Joan, Gerry & Amy Pet Sitting - JOAN GOOD, ANT 524-4423 Wishing you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us
