Health workers
need flu shots
Dominique Milburn
signal -star. staff
The Huron County Health Unit has ex-
pressed concern over the number of health
care employees who have been immu-
nized against both the H1N1 and seasonal
flu viruses.
Last week, the HU released an advisory
that stated low rates of immunization put
residents of long-term care facilities and
patients in hospital at risk.
According to Dr. Nancy Cameron, med-
ical officer with the HU, though public
response to the vaccine has been positive,
low numbers of inoculations have been re-
ported for health care employees.
"We know through research that the im-
munization of health care workers is a key
part of preventing a serious outbreak in a
facility," Cameron said, adding "health
care workers have an obligation to the
highest standard of care for their patients—
and that includes immunization."
Cameron said Monday, Dec. 21 that
low vaccination numbers coming in from
"mostly long-term care facilities" caused
the initial concern at the HU. Now, Camer-
on says she is encouraging health workers
to get their shots "as soon as possible" to
help stay the spread during flu season.
The HU says health care facilities across
the province are required to have policies
in place that ensure any unimmunized
staff member is unable to work during an
influenza outbreak. Cameron says a lack
of immunized workforce could become
problematic if a facility had insufficient
staff numbers to provide quality care.
"The H1N1 vaccine has been proven
safe and highly effective," Cameron add -
So far within the county, the impact of
the H1N1 virus has, for the most part, been
mild. Cameron said the number of con-.
finned H1N1 cases in both Huron and the
prrovince are beginning to drop.
"We're still encouraging everyone who
hasn't yet to get the shot. We're going to be
in the flu season for a couple months yet,"
she said. "Just because the numbers are
dropping doesn't mean it has gone away."
More than 17,000 residents have been
vaccinated against both the seasonal and
H1N1 flu viruses, and now, medical clinics
and pharmacies are receiving shipments of
the vaccine in an effort to increase oppor-
tunities for residents to get the shot.
"I know the government has opened it
up for pharmacies to give shots, so there
are lots of places people can go to get the
vaccine," Cameron said.
Shots are also available through most
physicians across the county. For more in-
formation on H1N1 as well as the seasonal
influenza, visit the HU web site at ww.
