"Our vantage point is beautiful." THE LEGENDARY BLSSET BROTHER'S CREAMERY The end of Bisset's Hill Road in Saltford was for many years the home of the Bisset Brothers Saltford Heights Creamery- a place where many longtime residents may recall visiting for a scoop or two- or more- of their very own ice cream. The Saltford Heights Creamery was first established in the late 1800s by Samuel Bisset. After calling it quits as a stoneworker at the Benmiller mill, Samuel and wife Jane with the beginnings of what would become a 10 -child family, took charge at the Pfrimmer farm near the mill. There, according to the writing of Robert M. Bisset for the 1984 Huron County Historical Atlas, over a cold -running spring a milkhouse was built for the cooling and keeping of the milk, destined to be peddled to Goderich. In 1896, Samuel put in an order for glass bottles, implementing a new era of milk sales. Though not the first in Canada to incorporate bottled delivery, Bisset's was one of, if not the first, in the province (The first in Canada is credited to a J.J. Joubert of Montreal in 1892). In 1902, Samuel and family moved to what would become known as Saltford Heights. Bisset's was a favoured site for Reuben. R. Sallows throughout his illustrious career as a landscape photographer. A variety of images of Samuel and his growing boys, Gord, James, Peter, Robert and William, can be found at the Sallows Gallery in Goderich, as well as a variety of county and township historical publications. The dairy farm continued revolutionizing itself as industrial technology progressed. It installed its first milking machine in 1910, soon leading to the production of creamery butter in 1918, and ice cream in 1920. Bisset's own ice cream proved itself a local favourite for more than 50 years, until production was halted in 1972-73, when the creamery and dairy were decommissioned. GROWING WORD COUNT The Burgsma's aren't alone in their home-based notoriety. In the number 17 edition of Edifice Old Home Magazine, Dr. Ken and Nancy Hughes' 1878 Victorian home in Goderich's west end garnered a five-page pictorial and subscriber's story. The piece outlines the commission and construction of Donald Strauchan's three-level brick and wood manse, with supplies shipped expressly from England. The home stood as the base of operations for Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Hughes dentistry practice from 1949 to 1973, until daughter Nancy and husband Ken became owners in 2001. The couple followed through with their own extensive restoration process soon after. Edifice is a Canada -wide publication dedicated to owners of old homes. More recently, the December 2009 issue of Homestyle Magazine featured a four-page spread about Kulpepper's Kitchen Store entitled Going Gourmet in Goderich. The piece highlights the community as well as owner Steve Rock's wide range of products.
