Local Masonic lodges amalgamate
A special and historic ceremony of amalgama-
tion in Carlow Wednesday joined the membership
of Morningstar Lodge No. 309 and Clinton Lodge
No. 84 into a single Masonic lodge, now known as
Morningstar -Clinton Lodge No. 309.
The leader of Ontario's 50,000 Freemasons, Ray
Daniels of Kitchener, conducted the amalgamation
ceremony uniting the lodges that were instituted in
1874 in Carlow in Colborne Township and 1857 in
Clinton.
Daniels, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of
Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons (AF&AM) of
Canada in the Province of Ontario, presides over 570
lodges across the province and said that while some
rural lodges are forced to amalgamate, Freemasonry
is attracting quality young candidates to the fraternal
organization.
"We are starting to make gains now in small com-
munities and urban areas, not only in numbers but in
the quality of the young men who join and are look-
ing for role models," Daniels said. "Any good man,
who is sincere about what they are looking for, is
welcome to join. It is a sustainable fraternity."
With a history of 150 years in Ontario, the fraternal
organization has quietly endeavored to assist men to
be better citizens and, have an impact on their com-
munities and become better men through their efforts.
While the number of lodges shrinks to consolidation,
Daniels says the membership continues to grow with
impressive candidates.
"We are now taking in about 1,300 initiations a
year but the peak years for the organization were af-
ter WW II when we grew by 5,000 members a year,"
he said. "I am impressed not only by the numbers
who are joining, but by the quality of the men we are
attracting."
At the special meeting Wednesday, Joe Freeman
was installed as the Worshipful Master of Morning-
star -Clinton Lodge No. 309, taking over
the reins from Wayne Snyder, Worship-
ful Master of Morningstar Lodge and Jim
Craig, who served as Worshipful Master
of Clinton Lodge No. 84. The amalgam-
ated lodge will have a membership of up
to 125 Masons.
Freemasonry is the world's oldest and
largest fraternal organization, boasting a
membership of over four million Masons
worldwide, half of them in North Amer-
ica. Any man who becomes a Mason is
taught a pattern for living -reverence, mo-
rality, kindness, honesty, dependability
and compassion.
