HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-12-16, Page 33Thunder basketball is back on Goderich court With their six-week basketball skills camp completed, the Goder- ich Thunder basketball team saw its first game action November 29 play- ing host to the St. Thomas Shock at GDCI. In the first quarter, the Thunder started slowly, working out some nervous energy. The team settled down led by. Riley O'keefe, John Doherty, Mitch Clarke, and Connor Cox. In the second quarter, Harrison Lobb, Jonathan Ridsdale, Ethan Milne, and James Tigert provided their team with plenty of hustle and energy. The Shock went on a 10 -point run to take a 23-13 lead into the break. The home side kept battling in the third quarter with strong efforts from Mitch Depatie, Brendan Bau- man, and Tyler Moss. The Thunder twin towers of Mi- chael McGee and Robbie Franken did an excellent afternoon of con- trolling rebounds against a very skilled St. Thomas team. Franken led the Thunder scor- ing with 10 points. In the end, the Shock jolted the Thunder 52-23 in what was a very entertaining youth basketball game. Midget Sailorettes undefeated in six The Midget Sailorettes edged out Up- per Maitland four goals to three in the Memorial Arena this past week. Kristin McColl (pened the God- erich scoring with an assist from Ra- chel Sowerby. Moments later Shayla Mathers fired a good net stretcher into the Upper Maitland net on a pass from Kelsa Curran. In the second period, Taylor Pritchard and Michelle Kelly abetted Mathers' second goal. Emily Gordon earned the game winning goal late in the third pe- riod. Kelly and goaltender Jessica Yates are credited with the assists. In Lucknow on Sunday night, the Sailorettes battled to a 1-1 tie. In a closely fought match, Kristin McColl scored the only Goderich goal. Excellent defensive work by Jaden Mitchell and Jacqueline Martin were able to shut down the aggressive Luc - know offensive lines. Despite the tie, the Midget Sailor- ettes have been undefeated in six regu- lar season games.
