Health Unit
launches kid's
health web site
Want to know what to do to console a
crying baby? Or when your child should
be in a new car seat? The Huron Coun-
ty Health Unit has launched the Child
Health section of their web site for Hu-
ron County parents and caregivers. The
section includes topics such as breast-
feeding, child nutrition, health unit pro-

tum depression.
Public Health Manager Jacqueline
Hart says this is a great new resource
for families in Huron County. "There
are dozens of resources and links to im-

portant information about child health.
This is a perfect complement to our pub-
lic health nurses working directly with
families of young children. People can
get information at any time through the
web site."
Besides written information, Hart says
she's especially pleased the website of-
fers podcasts of Huron County mothers
who breastfeed and video links on how
to properly install car seats. There are
also many information brochures that
can be downloaded.
The Child Health section of the web
site can be found at www.huroncounty.

Huron wants kids
in the kitchen
Homemade granola bars? Apple and
cheese sandwich? Ideas for healwy and
easy lunches and snacks for kids can be a
challenge for caregivers.
That's why Huron County kids are being
invited to enter EatRight Ontario's Kids
Recipe Challenge. The idea is to create
an original, kid -friendly recipe for either
school lunches or after school snacks. Stu-
dents in Grades 1 to 6 can enter and have a
chance to win gift certificates, clothing and
cookware.
Public Health Dietitian Amy MacDonald
says this is the perfect opportunity for par-
ents looking for something for the kids to
do over the long Christmas break.
MacDonald also says "don't be intimi-
dated" if you're not a master chef.
"You don't have to be a whiz in the kitch-
en to come up with a great recipe idea — just
experiment!"
MacDonald says when kids are part
of meal planning they develop life long
healthy eating habits — something she'd
like to see more of in Huron County.
"We know that most Huron County chil-
dren are not eating enough vegetables and
fruit. Ontario teens and children also do
not drink enough milk and alternatives for
healthy bone development. Taking part in
creating a new recipe might excite some
kids to learn more about healthy eating."
For more information about EatRight On-
tario's first annual Kids Recipe Challenge,
visit www.ontario.ca/eatright for contest
details and entry form or call 1-877-510-
510-2 for more information. The deadline
to enter is January 6, 2010.
Recipes will be judged on:
Nutrition — School day lunches must in-
clude FOUR food groups from Canada's
Food Guide. After school snacks should
include TWO food groups from Canada's
Food Guide; Taste;- Originality; Ease. of
preparation; Response to the question,
"Why would kids like this recipe?'" (1010
words or less): "
The recipe challenge is sponsored by Di-
etitians of Canada and the Ontario Ministry
of Health Promotion.
