Recognizing Remembrance
The Goderich Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 held
their annual Remembrance Day poster, essay and
poetry contest recently. Nearly two dozen area youth
from public and high schools were recognized for their
creative works. Above, winners line the steps to the
Branches' Jubilee Room December 2.

places where puppies are mass
produced for profit. Dogs are
seen as nothing other than puppy
producers for the pet shop indus-
try. They and are bred non-stop in
terrible conditions. The dogs and
puppies typically do not receive
veterinary care and little attention
is paid to breed standards, genet-
ics, socialization and so on. As a
result, puppy mill puppies often
face a lifetime of problems. They
can exhibit behavioural problems,
socialization problems as well as
health problems.
While many feel as if they are
`saving' that pet store puppy they
are, in fact, creating a demand for
puppy mills. That puppy might
by safe, but his parents are not.
Another place puppies come
from is backyard breeders. These
are people who may breed dogs
for profit, though on a smaller
scale than a puppy mill. They
may also have unintentional lit-
ters,
itters, as a result of not having
their pets spayed or neutered.
As with puppy mills, puppies
from backyard breeders can have
poor genetic health and tempera-
ment
emperament problems. Many backyard
breeders advertise puppies, es-
pecially around Christmas, in lo-
cal newspaper classified ads and
online classified web sites such as
Craig's List and Kijrjr.
Even if a puppy comes from a
reputable breeder the holidays are
probably the worst time to intro -
hectic time
a new dog
duce a puppy into.a family. Pup-
pies need time to adjust to their
new surroundings and get used
to a schedule — of feeding, potty
breaks, training, etc. The holi-
days are often a hectic time, with
a lack of normal routine which
could cause a lot of unnecessary
stress to a puppy.
Christmas holidays also present
hazards to little puppies. There
are also many decorations and
holiday treats that can be fatal to
puppies — such as chocolate and
poinsettias which are poisonous
to dogs and can be fatal if eaten.
Those who give a puppy as a
gift want to see the recipient's
eyes light up — to see the joy and
surprise on their face on Christ-
mas
hristmas morning. However the com-
mitment of a puppy lasts beyond
Christmas day... that puppy will
rely on its owner to provide it
with everything it needs (physi-
cally and emotionally) for its en-
tire life.
If someone wants to bring a
puppy into their life that desire
will be them long after Christ-
mas... at a time when all people
are committed and give the pet
the best chance of success . and
a happy, healthy life. When that
time comes remember to say no
to puppy mills. Don't shop, adopt

mane Society)
