Goderich District Collegiate Institute is looking
forward to the Olympics, and getting fit doing it.
The school's student council is running a competi-
tion between the staff and the stu-
dents, seeing who can bike 4,000
km, the distance to Vancouver,
where the winter games are being
held.
"The idea was to promote fit-
ness, and activity at the same
time, and generate excitement
about the Olympics," Brian
Moody, staff advisor for the stu-
dent council explained.
"It's a great, friendly competi-
tion," Jessica Adams, representa-
tive of student council said.

the students have biked 675 km and the staff have
travelled 650 km since the start of the event in mid-
November.
"We got the bikes last year as part of a grant from
The Huron County Health Unit, and one of the re-
quirements was that we would hold this kind of
event," Moody said.
The staff and students council are hoping to get each
of GDCI's 500-600 students involved, which works
out to approximately eight km per student.
The bikes are set up in the library, and the place-
ment is designed to remind students of the competi-
tion they have going on with the staff.
If the students win, they will be awarded with an
afternoon of watching the Olympics on a projection
screen in the gym. Staff awards had not been decided
upon at press time.
"We've hit kind of a lull, with everyone getting
ready for the end of the year, but we're going to come
back in January stronger, and hope to hit 4,000 km as
soon as possible," Adams said.
