Holidays a great time to shop for donations to women's shelter

It's a season of glad -tidings, warm wel-
comes, and the giving and receiving of gifts,
but for some people, this time of the year can
be the hardest to struggle through.
The Huron Women's Shelter provides tem-
porary housing and assistance for women and
children who have been forced on their own,
and that can be especially hard during this
time of the year.
The shelter always welcome to donations,
however this holiday season, they've got some
specific needs.
"The standard things are always helpful, and
useful," Michelle Hansen, executive director
of the women's shelter said. "Paper products
are great, toiletries, and diapers. Diapers are
really, really useful."

Reform Church, representing the Goderich
Ministerial Association, makes a donation
of $400 to Michelle Hansen, the executive
director of the Huron Women's Shelter, to
be used for gift purchases for the shelter's
charges.

Hansen also said that one of the simplest
things in the world is appreciated; underwear.
"We really appreciate it when we receive
new women's underwear," she said. "We have
lots of used clothing, which works well, but
it's really nice to have new underwear."
Another item that the shelter is looking for
is bicycles.
"We would like to have a bicycle or two to
loan to the women," she said. "It doesn't have
to be new; if someone has one they aren't us-
ing, a bicycle or two would be lovely."
Hansen said this holiday season has brought
in many donations, but the shelter can always
use more, as they are usually running at more
than capacity.
"We had a very high occupancy rate at the
shelter as of late," she said. "Between 100 and
130 per cent since September."
Other items that the shelter is seeking can
be found on their "Now Needed" list on their
website; www.huronwomensshelter.com.
"The things on the list are things that we ei-
ther find ourselves short of right now, or items
that we need pretty regularly," Hansen said.
"And money is never a bad thing. Cheques are
much appreciated, and of course we can issue
tax receipts."
Gift certificates from local grocery stores
are also appreciated, according to Hansen, as
they provide the opportunity for the shelter to
put shopping in the hands of the women in
their care.
Hansen explained that the shelter, which is
funded as a ten bed location, often has 15 to
16 women and children in the shelter at a time,
and can use all the help they can get.
The shelter recently held their annual
Christmas party, where women and children
who have been helped by the shelter over the
past year are given gifts to help them during
the holiday season.
"We had 38 women and 60 children, all of
whom were provided gifts for," she said.
