"Wow, I made it."
And with those words, the Reeve
of Central Huron makes it a trifecta.
Bert Dykstra will lead Huron
County as Warden following a secret
ballot by county council Dec. 2.
That decision, coupled with the
elections of Carol Mitchell as Huron -
Bruce MPP and Ben Lobb as Huron -
Bruce MP, Xneans all three upper
tier levels of government are led by
residents of Central Huron.
Still, Dykstra proved humble as he
accepted the appointment, which saw
him vying for the spot against Morris-
Turnbeny Mayor Dorothy Kelly.
Outgoing Warden Ken Oke, Mayor
of South Huron, made note of the
large crowd on hand for the inaugural
ceremony at county council chambers
in Goderich.
"It's great to see a large crowd
beyond the rail," he says. "This is the
day for the new warden ... but don't
forget the old guy."
In nominating Dykstra for the
spot, Coun. John Grace (Goderich)
notes Dykstra is known as a "true
gentlemen" with compassion and
commitment for and to Central Huron
and Huron County.
Grace also notes Dykstra was
first elected to municipal council in
1991, and that he has been Reeve
of Central Huron for two terms,
where he has served on a number of

During nomination speeches to
council, Dykstra said his goals for
the coming one-year term would
be to continue working alongside
fellow councillors for the betterment
of Huron County, "not as someone
special but as one of you."
"When I'm tallcing to you, I like to

Dykstra, who notes his management

or situation.
"Our purpose here is to
improve and build up Huron
County," said Dykstra, who
notes that as a lifelong resident,
he is committed to improving
infrastructure while caring for
the less fortunate and creating
new opportunities for growth.
Pointing to the county's Official
Plan and four pillars of the economy,
which are recognized as agriculture,
tourism, manufacturing and cultural/
creative industries, Dykstra says there
is much work to be done in 2010.
"There are opportunities for growth
and change," says Dykstra. "Change
is inevitable so we should relish it
and accept it."
"I am personally excited and feel
very honoured and privileged," says
Dykstra. "I have big shoes to fill."
In noting there is a lot of experience
in the room, Dykstra said his term as
warden will be one that features a
spirit of cooperation that builds on
the cohesiveness and unified nature
of the council in place.
Dykstra also took time out to pay
kudos to county staff.
"You meet the challenges head on
and overcome them," he said.
Dykstra adds that he hopes to work
