Lucknow residents gather
after tragic passing
The Lucknow and District Com-
munity Centre was packed to ca-
pacity with family and friends who
came to pay their respects this past
Sunday to Shirley (Hamilton) Hunt-
er. A house fire on Dec. 10 took the
life of the 75 -year-old resident of
Stauffer Street in Lucknow.
Members of the Lucknow and
District Fire Department performed
CPR until paramedics arrived and
took over. Hunter succumbed to her
injuries on scene, and was subse-
quently taken by ambulance to the
Wingham and District Hospital.
A two-day investigation over the
weekend, by the Fire Marshall and
electrical investigators, came to the
conclusion that the source of the
fire was undeterminable according.
to Lucknow and District Fire De-
partment, Chief Peter Steer.
The fire department took the call
at 8:17 a.m. on Thursday morning
and the fire chief and deputy fire
Shirley Hunter
chief were on scene at 8:21 a.m.
with the volunteer firefighters ar-
riving on scene at 8:25 a.:11. The
fire department remained on scene
for four hours to contain the fire.

This is the last week for donations to
the Huron County Christmas Bureau, and
long-time volunteer coordinator Joan Van-
denBroeck said the numbers look to be the
same as last year.
However, with just two days left in their
campaign, she said there is still time for
both families and for donors to come for-
ward.
"I had anticipated this year we'd be the
same as last year. You never know," she
said. "We're not done yet, the phone is still
ringing."
Once again, VandenBroeck said the Bu -

reau is lacking in gifts for teenagers, add-
ing many find the age group "too hard to
buy for."
"We continue to encourage donors to
consider the older children," she said. "Put
your paper down now, and go get a gift.
"If you have anything that would be ap-
propriate for teens, we encourage you to
drop it off at North Street. We will wel-
come you with open arms."
Families will be in all this week for confi-
dential appointments with the Bureau, and
VandenBroeck said the organization wants
to send a message of thanks to their many
contributors. The Huron County Christmas
Bureau can be reached at 1-800-265-5198.
