Sailors playing better as a team: Goetz Denny Scott signal -star staff The Goderich Jr. 'C' Sailors came close, but dropped two matches over the weekend - a 2-1 shootout- loss versus the Kincardine Bull- dogs, and a 6-4 loss to the Wing - ham Ironmen. Both games were hardfought, as the Sailors stayed within striking distance of the lead, but couldn't convert on their chances to put themselves over the top. The Sailors loss versus Wingham had them trailing 5-4 late in the third when an open -net goal sealed their fate. Coach Todd Goetz said that he has seen a marked improvement in the team, and that they've played great hockey recently. "In the last eight games, we've played very well," he saici. "I think we're playing smarter hockey, and we're bringing energy, and hope- fully that's a result of the program we've put in play. " Goetz, who said he's strong on defensive play attributed the change in playing style to the team stepping up their game. "Most of my players are now playing to their full potential," he said. "It's taken awhile, but I've asked them to change their play- ing styles, and they're doing it now. Hopefully that will help us come out with more wins." Friday's action against the Kin- cardine Bulldogs saw the Sailors start strong with two early goals in the first period. Brendan Thomson netted the first marker, with assists credited to Brent Alton and Grant Alton. Thomas Bedour scored Goderich's second goal unassisted. Later in the first, Kincardine put in two back-to-back markers, one on the powerplay, to tie the game, and later put in a third to take the lead 2-1. Entering the second period down by one, Goderich fought hard, pro- viding Jamie Miller to opportunity to score, tying the game at 2. There was no further scoring until the game went to a shootout, which re- quired 14 players total to determine a winner. • Saturday's action saw Goderich start the game off behind, with Wingham scoring a goal in the first minute, however, the Sailors LUBE - OIL FILTER All Gas Powered Cars and Light Trucks $QQOO Plus Tax Includes: EHE (Environmental handling charge), up to 5L of oil, Fluid Top Ups, Exterior Car Wash. Wingham answered with two of their own, followed by an open -net goal late in the third, to take the match 6-4. . The Sailors continue their six - game home -stay with a match against the first -seeded Walkerton Hawks, who beat the Sailors 2-1 in Walkerton during their last season match up.
