A successful application would have seen improvements to the runway and air- port safety, however, the numbers were against it. The airport application was one of nearly 600 projects vying for $100 mil- lion dollars. "While many good projects were sub- mitted, difficult decisions had to be made," wrote David Elgie, director at the Federal Economic Development Agency of South - em Ontario. "The requests significantly exceeded the funds available for the first intake. The total amount requested for all appli- cations was more than $750 million. HARBOUR PARK UPGRADES It's going to be a busy spring at Lions Harbour Park. Tenders will go out in February for two washrooms to be built, as well as upgrades to the bandshell. Architect Adolfo Spaletta got the go- ahead to start the design process at the Nov. 30 meeting of Goderich Town Council, and work is expected to begin in March. Due to Goderich's busy summer tourist schedule, the work would have to be com- pleted before July, otherwise, it will have to be left in working condition until after the Labour Day weekend. Just down the hill from the park, the Goderich CPR sta- tion could also be off-limits for the sum- mer. Requests for proposals (RFPs) have been ushered by council, and the avail- ability of the station depends entirely on whether or not a successful buyer is found for the station. If it remains the town's domain for the summer, events such as the annual Art Show and Sale will be able to use the facility, however private ownership would mean groups who routinely use the old train station would need to find another stop. "Well, around here, most people plan for a long time before their weddings," Becker said. "But the same kind of planning isn't really necessary here; it can be, but it's not needed." "We'll be offering the service very soon," Becker said. "As soon as we receive an of- ficial registry." There are things to remember with civil ceremonies, according to Becker. "One of the big things is that the ceremony really only legally requires three different things to be said," Becker said. 'That and • • ceremonies or any other religious symbol or being, shouldn't be involved. If someone comes and asks us about [a religious service], we'll tell them they should speak to a spiritual leader."
