Photo by Denny Scott Genevive Madden and Dorothy Fraser, two volunteers for the Hospital Auxiliary, helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital's gift shop with a tasty treat. Gift Shop celebrates 50 years in business DOIfinique MIIburn signal -star staff` The front end of the God- erich Alexandra Marine and General Hospital was buzzing on Sunday as the Gift Shop celebrated a big anniversary. For 50 years, the shop has been offering a variety of goods— a small inventory, but filled with interesting items, like hand -knitted garments, arrangements and commer- cial clothing items as well as toiletries that prove popular with shoppers, according to Jane Morgan, a member of the AMGH Auxiliary. The anniversary was marked with a celebration Dec. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the front entrance of the facility, where the shop is currently located. With cake and 50 years worth of memo- rabilia, Auxiliary members looked forward to the future of their operation. "It's been a gentle and grad- ual thing that has always been available at the hospital," Mor- gan said. A Women's Auxiliary was formed at AMGH in 1921 under the leadership of Mrs. Graeme Cameron. The Auxil- iary has supported the hospital in various ways through the years, sometimes mending, sometimes sewing, but always raising funds for the facility's equipment purchases. The Auxiliary formed a Gift Shop and managing committee in 1959, and it's been gradually gaining speed ever since. "It started off as a gift room, provided by the hospital, and open three days a week," Mor- gan said. "Through the 60s it grew into something more than that, and we hope to develop the shop further in the future." The Gift Shop has set its sights on a new home, one with a little more foot traffic like the east end of the facility near the Emergency Department, Mor- gan added. This, she said, might draw more people in to have a look around. At the moment, the Gift Shop is open weekday afternoons. "The hospital has been really good to us, and the staff have been terrific," she said. The Auxiliary members are really great people. Devoted, gener- ous— I can't tell you how good it is to work with them." While Gift Shop manage- ment committee members are always on the lookout for more varied and sought-after items to add to their shelves, they're also handing over their proceeds to various hospital initiatives. In the past, the Auxiliary has helped AMGH obtain major purchases, like an oxygen tent and suction pump for the Oper- ating Room, and an operating and examination table, among countless others. The Auxiliary also donates bursaries for AMGH staff members who aim to upgrade their skills with supplementary courses.
