Bureau gets boost
from Atom Lakers
- Gerard Crosses
signal -star staff
The Huron County
Christmas Bureau re-
ceived a boost of team
spirit last week, courtesy
of the Huron -Perth Minor
'AAA' Atom Lakers.
Each player on the team
bought a brand new toy to
donate to the
bureau - an
idea sparked
by one of
their players,
nine-year-old
Baden Parent.
Parent and
fellow Laker
Trent Buchan-
an were doing
Santa duties at the bureau
last week, delivering toys
for less -fortunate kids.
"It's so more kids can
get presents when they
wake up on Christmas,"
Buchanan said.
Parent said he hopes
other teams catch the giv-
ing fever, adding it is all
for a very good cause.
"(Teams) should do it
so a lot of people can get
presents," he said. "A lot
of kids can't get presents
at Christmas."
With the help of his
mom, Vicki, Parent draft-
ed a letter to Goderich
Minor Hockey, asking
them to follow suit in the
spirit of giving.
Receiving the toys on
behalf of the bureau,
Barb Ottewell said the
hockey players set the
bar high for others to fol-
low, thanking the boys
for their gener-
osity.
Meanwhile,
Ottewell said
people have
been very good
with donating
to the food bank
and bureau, and
all the staples
are covered.
However...
"We have to remember
it's Christmas," she said.
"People like treats."
While she said this year
is bound to be different
due to the crippled econo-
my, she said regardless of
how it pans out, the num-
ber of helping hands this
year was tremendous.
"We are thrilled with
the number of volunteers
that came out," she said.
While the staff at the
Bureau just started sorting
Don't forget, There
is still time to give
something back this
holiday season( The
Christmas Bureau is
accepting donations all
week long
