Goderich to host Canadian Women's Hockey League

Goderich Minor Hockey will play host to
some of the finest athletes on ice December
19, as they host a Canadian Women's Hockey
League game between the Brampton Thun-
der and the Ottawa Senators.
Eric Martin, referee in chief, said the idea
came about from his former on -ice experi-
ence.
"I used to referee with them and I know
some of the players that are still there," he
said. "I just called them up and got things go-
ing.
The CWHL contains many national cham-
pions, Olympians and top university athletes,
and Martin said fans can expect a world-class
hockey game on the Maitland Recreation
Centre ice.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Goder-
ich Minor Hockey. Martin said the proceeds
will go a long way to offsetting what can be
an expensive game to play.
"It should help control some costs and keep
minor hockey affordable," he said.
The Thunder and Senators, meanwhile,
will be promoting women's hockey, and
Martin said there will be lucky representa-
tives from each of Goderich's girls teams
sharing ice time with the ladies.
"We've got four girls teams in Goderich,"
he said. "We want to try to get one player
from each team to accompany them for their
warm up "
The students at Goderich Public School
will also be getting involved, singing the na-
tional anthem for the CWHL game.
Door prizes and a silent auction will also
be featured, and tickets are available by call-
ing Gardener's Dairy at
519-524-2188 or God-
erich Minor Hockey
at 519-524-6893 for
more information.
"It should be a great,
fun afternoon," Martin
said. "With lots of girls
hockey."

Midget Sailorettes have great showing at
Saugeen Shores Silverstick tournament
The Midget Sailorettes played an excellent tournament
in last weekend's Saugeen Shores Silverstick. In game one
in Southampton, Jessica Ryan scored the Sailorettes only
goal in the dying seconds of the game. Ryan's goal was
enough to give the team a 1-1 tie against Kincardine.
Later, the Goderich midget girls won a decisive 3-0 win
over Saugeen Shores. Kelsa Curran opened the Goderich
scoring with assists from Michelle Kelly and Jaden Mitch-
ell. Within seconds, Shayla Mathers scored the Sailorettes'
second goal on a long pass from Kelly.
Rachel Sowerby with help from Jacqueline Martin got
the last Goderich goal in the third period. Netminder Jessi-
ca Yates earned the shutout with the aid of strong defensive
work from Danielle Bean and Laura Smith.
In game three, the Sailorettes dominated Upper Mait-
land with a convincing 5-1 win. Michelle Kelly earned the
hat trick with three goals. Mathers and Sowerby abetted
Kelly's first goal. Kelsa Curran won an assist on Kelly's
second goal.
Along with Sowerby, Kelly also received a point for as-
sisting the Sailorettes' first goal
of the game scored by Mathers.
Jessica Ryan and Jaden Mitchell
worked hard around the Saugeen
net and assisted Julia Huber's
goal. Despite aggressive play
from Kristin McColl and Taylor
Pritchard, the Midget Sailorettes
fell 2-0 to Mitchell in Paisley Sat-
urday.
Peewees battle hard against Cougars
In the first of four match -ups this weekend
for the Pee Wee Rep Sailors, the boys came
out on top winning a very physical and penal-
ty -ridden game against the Mitchell Meteors.
Both teams were on the offensive right from
the face-off, and end to end action filled most
of the first period. At 3:07, a two -on -one in
Mitchell territory gave way to a goal by Sail-
or Stephen De Jager, nicely set up by Kody
Langlois. Despite some great checking and
defensive plays, Mitchell managed to squeak
one by goalie Jordan Johnson to tie the game
to end the period. Dominic Burbine scored an
unassisted goal for the Sailors to tie the game
up after an early second period goal by the
Meteors. Much confusion and many penalties
later, Burbine netted another assisted by Ian
Simpson and De Jager to put our Pee Wees up
3-2.
Kody Langlois and Simpson also chipped
in goals helped out by Jarred Bakker, Rylan
Lamb, and Kyle Langlois. With just three min-
utes left in the third, Mitchell capitalized with
two Sailors in the penalty box and scored their
final goal of the game, making it a 5 -3 God-
erich win.
The following day they faced the Kincar-
dine Kinucks. The Sailors were outskated in
the second and third periods, and gave up six
goals for a disappointing 6 - 0 loss.
Less than two hours later, the Sailors were
on the ice again, this time in high gear and to-
tally committed to playing a solid, hard game
against the Mount Brydges Cougars. The ac-
tion was fast, furious, and physical from the
outset. A timely goal by Kody Langlois, set up
by Chase Kulich with 5.1 seconds left in the
first period gave the Goderich team momen-
tum that propelled them into the second pe-
riod. Goalie Jordan Johnson was spectacular,
making save after save. A few prime opportu-
nities by Simpson and Langlois unfortunately
didn't pan out, and the second period ended
still 1 - 0 Sailors.
The third period was no less a battle, but
the Cougars managed to tie it up at one goal
apiece at 12:56. Not fazed, the Sailors put on
even more pressure as the fight for the win
continued. Mount Brydges was able to score
once more to put them up 2 - 1, but the Pee
Wee Sailors didn't give up and fought hard un-
til the final buzzer. The crowd was on their feet
for the incredible effort of their Sailors. The
Mount Brydges team won the game, but our
Pee Wee Rep Sailors took home a victory that
day as well.
all ages.
Tickets will also be available at both God-
erich Pirates and Junior 'C' Sailors games up
to the 19th. Game time is 3 p.m.
