Petites breeze through Mitchell ringette tournament
The Goderich Petites ringette team went
4-0 over the weekend, winning the Petite di-
vision of the Mitchell Ringette Tournament.
Great play, along with teamwork proved to
be a winning combination for the team.
The Goderich squad met up with Mitchell
during the opener on Friday. Goderich came
out strong and took the game 8-2 with Nere-
na Goud scoring three times, Kyle Stanbury
twice and Brianne Merner, Grace Bonnett,
Erin Boyce and Lauren Erb getting a goal
each. The team held Mitchell to few scoring
opportunities and controlled the play with
great defensive work.
Courtney Sowerby played excellent in net,
making crucial saves when called upon.
The second game on Friday afternoon
started with Tara taking the lead early in the
first period. Goderich was surprised with
Tara's pressure early on and had to buckle
down and work hard. Kyle Stanbury lead
the offensive assault with six goals and two
assists. Nerena Goud added a pair and Erin
Boyce, Jenna Stanbury, Lauren Erb and Sar-
ah Glenn added singles.
Grace had four assists in the game also
making it her best effort to date this season.
Jessica Telford had two helpers as well.
After having Saturday off, the team trav-
elled back to Mitchell Sunday meeting For-
est in the morning. Goderich took the match

period. The Goderich Petites came to the
bench after the first period tied at three. Af-
ter a brief team meeting between periods,
the team came out hard, took the lead and
never looked back.
Lauren Erb and Nerena Goud had a pair
of markers, with Jenna Stanbury, Brianne
Merner and Kyle Stanbury finishing the
scoring. Courtney Sowerby made many
saves early on to earn the win. This game
was proof for the team that each win must
be earned with hard work.
The championship game was scheduled
for 5 p.m. on Sunday against the home team,
Mitchell. Playing the point, Jenna Stanbury
opened the scoring after heading to the net
and firing a shot into the mesh only 53 sec-
onds into the contest.
Kyra Lewis scored with a similar goal,
moving from outside the ringette line toward
the net and making no mistake with a nice
shot. With Kyle Stanbury scoring a goal be-
fore the end of the first, the score was 3-0 for
Goderich. The team looked like they wanted
to win.
Four more goals were scored during the
second, two by Nerena Goud, and singles
by Grace Bonnett and Lauren Erb. Kaitlyn
Austin had many opportunities with multi-
ple shots keeping the team on the edge of the
bench. The players were looking tired with
three minutes to go and Mitchell wanted to
score and break the shutout.
Courtney Sowerby would not allow it.
Sowerby made many saves during the final
few minutes to earn the shutout.
The Goderich Petites won 7-0 to become
the Mitchell Tournament Petite champions.
This is the second straight tournament
the Petite team has won after winning their
home tournament in October. The team
is also on a 12 game unbeaten streak with
seven straight wins.
Next weekend, the team is on the road
with a game in Forest on Saturday and a
game against Exeter on Sunday.
