When Marc Lepine entered &Ole Poly -
technique in Montreal and killed 14 women
in 1989, he claimed he was fighting femi-
nism.
Lepine wrote in his suicide letter he was
angry at the women, mostly engineering
students, for leaving their traditional gen-
der roles.
He accused them of seeking social chang-
es that took away from the rights of men. In
becoming engineers, they were overstep-
ping their bounds.
So they were killed.
December 6 will mark the 20th anniver-
sary of this incident.
Now acknowledged each year as the Na-
tional Day of Remembrance and Action on
Violence Against Women, memorial vigils
are being held across the country, including
here in Goderich.
They exist to remind us all of the social
issues at hand, violence against women and
a fear of feminism.

More than 50 people attended the service to honour the 14 women
killed during 1989s Montreal Massacre and all those who have experi-
enced violence against women.
"This event must never be forgotten,"
said Women's Shelter Exectutive Director.
Michele Hansen. "It represents an awaken-
ing in Canada about misogyny in our coun-
try, a sort -of underground issue."
"For the first time, people
realized there existed a genu-
ine hatred toward women by
virtue of only being women."
