Exterior restoration complete

With a final coat of red paint,
the Goderich Lighthouse will
once again stand tall as a symbol
of the town and its maritime his-
tory.
Moisture in the stonework had
caused minimal delays in the re-
finishing, and late -October rain
had delayed the painting of the
structure's exterior.
IR Construction of Bayfield did
the restoration work. The process
began late summer, when years
of old paint were blasted off the
building's exterior, making a
blank canvas of the historic light-
house.
The work comes with a price tag
of about $30,000, and every dol-
lar well spent, according to Coun-
cillor Heather Lyons. Lyons, who
also sits on the Heritage Goderich
board, credits the town's parks
manager for getting the job done.
"The Parks Department really
took it under their wing, especial-
ly Martin Quinn, and really did an
investigative process."
Given the age of the lighthouse
and the materials used in its con-
struction, a great deal of research
had to be done before the building
could be restored properly.
Lyons said the Marine Heritage
Committee under Jan Hawley
and Paul Carroll came up with
a "truckload of information" on
the lighthouse and the National
Archive gave the committee ad-
ditional historical documents.
The guidance and enthusiasm
of the marine heritage committee
got the ball rolling, Lyons said.
Heritage liason Barry Page= said
the lighthouse not only serves as a
maritime aid, but a popular desti-
nation for out-of-town explorers.
"The lighthouse is a tremen-

dous tourist draw," Page said.
"It's a well-known landmark for
the town and on top of that, it is
still a functioning lighthouse.
"It still has a job to do."
The white and red paint job is
mandatory of all working light-
houses on the Great Lakes.
Page added the Goderich mu-
nicipal heritage committee is very
pleased that the renovation of the
Goderich Lighthouse is near com-
pleted.
While there is still much work
to do on the building's interior,
the stonework and painting on the
outside have been handled with
care by IF Construction of Bay-
field.

Ian Falls of IF Construction
said in September a few discov-
eries were made along the way,
including slate walls and a copper
peak.
Lyons said the project received
approval to go over -budget from
a forward -thinking council. The
heritage restoration, she said,
helps keep the symbol of Goder-
ich looking its best.
As of last week, Page had . just
signed the official heritage appli-
cation for the building. He said
the committee hopes to install a
designation plaque at the town's
signature landmark in the spring.
As exterior work wraps up and
the scaffolding removed, the God-
erich lighthouse continues to be a
beacon of refuge for those on the
water and a reminder of a mari-
time past, present and future for
Goderich and her visitors.
