The number of confirmed cases of H 1 N 1 influenza in Ontario so far sits at 8,270 according to reports ending Nov. 21, Christine Taylor, of the Huron County Health Unit, said. She said now, cases look as if they will begin winding down. "Our biggest activity was from mid October to the first couple weeks in November," Taylor said. "From there, we have seen a slow decrease. [It] looks like we're heading out." In total, there have been 21 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Hu- ron County in 2009. Despite the waning numbers, Taylor said she hopes anybody who has not been vaccinated against the H1N1 flu virus will do so. While most people only need one shot of the H1N1 inoculation, Tay- lor added that some groups of chil- dren require two. "Children aged six months to under three years require two half - doses administered at least 21 days apart," Taylor said. All children aged six months to less than 10 years with an underly- ing medical condition which could make them more at -risk for com- plication require two full doses 21 days apart, she added. All healthy children three to 10 -years -old re- quire just one shot. A public clinic is scheduled to take place in Goderich on Thursday, Dec. 3. It will be the last Goderich H1N1 clinic to be hosted by the Health Unit, however county healthcare providers have been provided with the vaccine. "Parents of chil- dren who have had the first dose can call their healthcare provider or the Health Unit to ar- range appointment for the second," Taylor said. More than 11,000 people have already been vaccinated at public clinics and physicians' offices throughout the region. Taylor is also encouraging local residents to get the seasonal flu vac- cine. The flu season typically begins in December and lasts until March, she said, noting January and February typically see the most cases. "It's really important to start think- ing about seasonal vaccine. Cases are already being reported in Quebec. It's only a matter of time before that vi- rus spreads."
