Vikes nab silver for volleyball season
The GDCI Senior Boys Volleyball team suffered an
unwanted end to their season Friday, failing to qualify for
'AA' Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations
(OFSAA) finals with a loss in the Western Ontario (WOS-
SAA) championship at Westminster Secondary School in
London.
The team qualified for WOSSAA by beating Stratford
Central in the Huron -Perth playoff semi-finals last week
and they also won the right to advance to the Huron -Perth
(HP) championship match held at St. Mike's. r
The semi-final match against Stratford Cen-
tral was intense as both teams knew that match 1
determined who would represent HP 'AA' 1
schools at WOSSAA. The Senior Vikes de- 1
feated Central in four sets with scores of 25-18, 1
25-17, 26-28, 25-20. 1
In the Huron -Perth finals against St. Mike's,
the Vikings stumbled and neither team brought
forth their best game. Battling a loud crowd,
veterans Joel Doherty, Aaron VandenHeuvel, 1
Josh Nicol -Macdonald, Zach Doherty, Sean
Dawson, Spencer Jones and Tom Dawson bat- 1
tled the best they could, but eventually came up 1
short losing to their 'AAA' rival 22-25, 17-25, 1
20-25. The Vikes lost the championship, but 1
brought home a silver medal. 1
At the WOSSAA championships on Friday, 1
the Vikings met up with Thames Valley Central
number -one seeded Westminster Secondary.
Despite the noise of a large home crowd, l
the Vikings stole the first set in a huny racking
up a score of 25-12 thanks in part to the stellar 1
jump serving of outside attacker Zach Doherty 1
and setter Aaron VandenHeuvel. Middles Joel
Doherty and Spencer Jones contributed to the 1
second set win (25-19) with their great blocks 1
and fantastic attacks. 1
The Vikes fell victim to their early and easy 1
success in the third and fourth sets with scores
of 18-25 and 21-25 detpite fantastic serving 1
from Anthony Alcorn.
The boys rallied back in the fifth set 17-15 1
to win the right to advance to the WOSSAA
championship.
According to Coach K:risty Phillips, "Libero 1
Dawson played excellent defence passing 11.
crucial balls when we needed him to, and outside hitters
Sean Dawson and Josh Nicol -Macdonald contributed to
the win with solid attacking from the outside."
After playing in a two and a half hour semi-final, the
Vikings met up with well rested Central Elgin who cruised
through a weaker semi-final to battle for the championship.
In a repeat of an earlier tournament encounter, the Vikes
couldn't pull off the win, despite early leads and aggressive
