The fighters from Lakeview Boxing
Club are settling into November after
a gold and silver medal showing at
Brantford's annual Summerhays Tour-
nament in mid-October.
Called. "a strong opponent who im-
proves each time she boxes" by the
Ontario Boxing Association, Natalie
Grguric continues to lead the Lakev-
iew team in victory.
Grguric won a unanimous decision
to take gold after a bout against an op-
ponent who towered over the petite lo-
cal fighter.
"Nat came out scared," said coach and
trainer Kirk Killam. "But she showed
some pressure. She put her head down
and started throwing bombs."
Her explosive performance netted
her the win "unanimously and distinc-
tively," Killam said. After gaining the
featherweight championship, Grgu-
ric went looking for more in the next
weight class.
However, the match against Amanda
Beaudin of Hamilton saw a split deci-
sion in her opponent's favour.
Meanwhile, Alex Vodden has been
developing steadily with his boxing
and worked hisway to a silver medal
finish at Summerhays.
"He was up against a really good
fighter from Guelph," Killam said.
"It was a very good fight. Perfectly
matched."
Both boys were timid coming off the
opening bell, Killam said, however by
round two the nerves disappeared and
a proper brawl ensued.
Killam said Vodden continues to
show promise in the ring, due in no
small part to his incredible commit-
ment.
"Alex is a rare find," Killam said.
"He could go places if he sticks with
it."
Meanwhile, Killam's own shot in
the ring would have to wait, as he got
some good news of his own.
"I didn't get to go to the fight," he
laughed. "I got a phone call that my
wife was in labour."
A healthy baby girl later, and Kil-
lam is ready to show Goderich how far
Lakeview Boxing has come in the past
year.
The club has moved from their East
Street location in Total Fitness to the
gymnasium at Victoria Public School
for weeknight training, and Killam
said new faces are always welcc ne to
come out.
On Saturday, November 28, Lakev-
iew will be taking their show on the

road to the Suncoast Mall, where Kil-
lam and Co. will educate and entertain
the crowd with live training and spar-
ring.
The day runs 10-4, with live boxing
demonstrations starting at noon.
"It's just about getting awareness
out there," Killam said. "It's not just
fighting. We teach nutrition, healthy
choices... there is no negativity."
Local merchants will also be show-
ing their support for Lakeview, with a
number of items donated for a silent
auction.
All proceeds go to Lakeview Box-
ing, and Killam said the community's
generosity will go a long way to keep-
ing a roof over their heads and gloves
on their hands.
Named after the famed Canadian
boxing brothers, the Summerhays
tournament saw more than 70 boxers
and 10 different clubs enter the ring.
