The county's EMS manager Dave Lew was flanked by support staff and the sys- tem's creators from Quinte West as the emergency public-address system was of- ficially launched at county council's Nov. 19 committee -of -the -whole session. That presentation included a test callout that saw targeted county councillors re- ceive calls from the system with regard to a missing child. Ed Woods, a cocreator of the Quinte West -based PRISM 911 program, thanked councillors for the invitation to the launch. And he notes the program has proven to be a big success in his home municipality where the community saved about $30,000 in one incident alone "It's worked very well on every event that we've utilized it for," he says. And, he notes, Huron County should take comfort in the knowledge that the provision of the PRISM 911 service is a partnership where support staff are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Meanwhile, the county's EMS manag- er credits councillors, Warden Ken Oke, county staff, Quitne West and various stakeholders, including the Huron County OPP and area fire coordinators for making it all happen. "It takes a great deal of people to make a project such as this come to pass," he says. Warden Ken Oke was among those laud- ing the system. "I have been behind this system for two or three years," says Oke, who conducted the ceremonial "pushing of the button" to activate the sytem for the first time. While system administrators note there are thousands of county residents that have yet to sign up with PRISM 911, Lew reports there are 8,000 people registered on the database. "I think every councilor should be an ambassador for the program and promote it," adds the warden. Meanwhile, Coun. Dorothy Kelly (Mor- ris T urnberry) notes her home municipal- ity sent out PRISM 911 registration forms with its tax bills and that perhaps other municipalities could follow suit. Inspector Dan Grant, of the Huron County OPP, is confident the system will aid police for a variety of uses including missing child alerts. "I think we'll make .tremendous use of this particular program," he says. Copies of the PRISM 911 registration form can be found at municipal offices or register online at www.huroncounty.ca/ PRISM
