Musical comedy comes to life

The East Gym at Goderich District Collegiate Institute
was aflutter with activity Sunday evening as the current
crop of dramatic students readied for their close-up.
This year, drama teacher and director David Armour
has led his ensemble into the roaring 1920s, the age of
prosperity, prohibition, and downfall, but most notably on
stage, the age of the Charleston.
Beginning its six -show run Thursday, Nov. 26, the GDCI
Art Department presents Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend,
a clever, light-hearted comic pastiche of 1920s musical
romantic comedies.
"I'm seeing argyle socks," Armour said to the amassed
drama company Nov 22. It was one of many off the cuff
flickers of creative vision that he would shout out between
musical and acting direction. "Can we make a note for
wardrobe?" he added.
The frenzy of creativity doesn't come solely from Armour
for this production. It's filled with triple -threat material into
which the entire cast, crew and orchestra has plunged head
first. The Boy Friend features three acts brimming with
song and dance routines made famous on Broadway and
community stages since its debut in 1954.
The show takes place at Madame Dubonnet's Finishing
School on the French Riviera. Polly, an English heiress,
falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy. Conscious of her
father's warning to beware of boys dating her for her
family's money, Polly pretends to be "just a secretary.".
Things get complicated with the unexpected arrival of
Polly's father and Lord and Lady Brockhurst. It turns out
that Lord and Lady Brockhurst are in fact Tony's wealthy
parents. Polly and Tony have shared the same secret — they
both come from wealthy families.
"Funny thing," Armour said anecdotally, "The play is
sometimes not as well known from its time in Broadway;
yet if you were to talk to the people who hold .the rights
they'd tell you it's one of their most produced musicals."

dance numbers.
That's because The Boy Friend is a small -stage favorite,
Armour said. It's most often produced by student and
community players, largely, he added, because it's such a
"charmer."
"It's quite cute and very funny. It's suitable for just about
anybody."

both GDCI and Goderich Public School, as well
as community members make up the production
cast and crew. It's a collaborative effort from the
school's entire Art Department, Armour added.
Arts instructor Paul McMullen lent his creative
hand to set design, while GDCI music teacher
Shelly Johnston leads the 10 -member orchestra
as musical director. Louise Dockstader, GPS
music teacher is also on board as chorus director
and pianist. But it's not just faculty leading the
way. Grade 12 student Shaunessy Sinnett, an
accomplished dancer in her own right, has laid
out all of the production's choreography from
scratch.
"I really wanted a show that would cut across
and reach every corner of the school," Armour
said. "It's a large undertaking involving a lot of
individuals from our whole community without
whom we simply couldn't do it"
The cast of 24 players includes students
of both GDCI and GPS, a concept with roots
already firmly planted at GDCI. In the past,
productions like 2001s The Wizard of Oz, and
1992s The Music Man are among a growing list
of stagings that have combined the elementary
and secondary communities. The Boy Friend
nuns Nov 26 to 28 and Dec. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m.
with a special Dec. 6 matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets,
priced at $12 for adults and $10 for students, can
be purchased at the GDCI Box Office Thursday,
Nov. 26 firm 12 to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., or by
calling GDCI at 519-524-7353 Ext. 2243.
