Maple Tree Housing Corporation honoured with Peace Award
signal -star staff
The Maple Tree Housing Corporation was
recently honoured with the YMCA Peace
Award for their significant contribution to fos-
tering peace in the Goderich and Huron com-
munity.
The award was be presented November 18
at the Goderich YMCA, prior to Peace Week,
which runs November 21-28.
According to Tracey Bolzon, international
development coordinator for the YMCA, the
Maple Tree name came up quite a few times
in nominations.
'The Maple Tree Housing Corp. came to
our attention because of their work to bring
affordable housing to Goderich," she said.
"They were able to demonstrate the criteria
nicely."
Among the criteria are the actions of the
nominees as a peacemaker having motivated
the local community, demonstrated ways to
live in peace, works for justice and harmo-
nious development and demonstrates posi-
tive ways to be a peacemaker and promotes
peace.
A strong volunteer base and a tireless com-
mittee have helped make Maple Tree a shin-
ing example of positive change, she said.
"Peace has many dimensions," said Goder-
ich YMCA director Jane Dawson. "This year,
we're celebrating 25 years of peace building."
From a social justice standpoint, Bolzon
said Maple Tree epitomizes the power of
community to make positive change.
"On behalf of Maple Tree Community
Housing Corporation, we are excited to re-
ceive this incredible award which reinforces
our directive and our goals to bring affordable
housing to Goderich," said Krista Andrews of
the Salvation Army. "The concept of peace
is often used when speaking about 'war torn'
countries far away... but we all need to exhibit
peace and share peace in our country, in this
county and in our town.
"We can give the gift of peace to others
when we attempt to provide and meet practi-
cal needs for people in our community such as
housing - a roof over someone's head."
From what began as a study on the need for
affordable housing three years ago blossomed
into the creation of 12 apartments and brought
together members of the community to work
on the renovated building.
"It's been a pretty long road they have trav-
elled over three years," Bolzon said. "They are
certainly committed to community capacity -
building.
"And they are serving people in poverty, in-
creasing their likelihood for success "
Maple Tree has been able to secure more
than $1 million in government funding for the
