The 2010 budget is now only a
few months away and town trea-
surer Judy Kay will have the task
of presenting it to both the public
and to council December 8 at 4
p.m. in county council chambers.
In preparation, town depart-
ments have been getting their
expenditures together for 2009.
Kay said while the budget process
spans several months and meet-
ings, the Dec. 8 presentation will
outline the significant items.
"I'll cover some of the high-
lights and start going through
each department discussing what
has happened there," she said.
The final property assess-
ment role for the town is not in
yet, however this is year two of
a phased -in increase courtesy of
the Municipal Property Assess-
ment Corporation.
The residential increase is
pegged at five per cent, however
that figure is not definite.
• "That's just based on current
projections," Kay said. "And we
just look at the town of Goder-
ich."
Kay said she expects capital
projects will generate some good
discussion at the council table,
especially water meters. A cost
report was given to council Nov.
10, showing price comparisons
for town -wide installation of per -
usage meters.
Kay said while the meeting
will primarily bring council up to
speed, it also provides an oppor-
tunity for the public to hear what
is happening at town hall.
"There's going to be a lot to
comprehend this year," she said.
"This is an open public meeting
and we certainly encourage any to
attend and be informed."
Goderich continues to have
high residential taxes, as an offset
for lower commercial. For every
dollar of residential tax money,
commercial pays $1.10. In some
communities the ratio is far high-
er for commercial.
Major capital projects include
equipment replacement and road
work however, Kay said it is too
early to have a final list of work.
Rather, that would be expected
as the budget is finished up in
February or March in order to get
tendering done by spring.
"Usually by that time, we can
get a pretty good projection on
what our year end will be," she
said. "It takes the whole month of
January to get the invoices in."
In the meantime, departmental
numbers continue to pour in as
the town prepares to see how on
track they were in 2009 and plan
for the coming year.
