by Heritage and Culture partnership and
held at the Blyth Memorial Hall. The
Symposium offered a positive and coop-
erative County -wide vision of what lo-
cal arts, culture and heritage groups and
individuals deem important in the cre-
ation of a central arts and cultural group
in Huron County.
During the morning session, partici-
pants learned about the different mod-
els of arts collectives used from guest
speakers; Anne Frost from The Grey/
Bruce Culture Network; Betty Anne
Keller from the Waterloo Advisory Com-
mittee on Culture; and Brenda Kaufman
from the North Perth Arts and Cultural
Council.
In the afternoon, participants were
guided through a visioning discussion on
what type of arts and culture collective
should exist in Huron County by Sonja
Erstic from the Ministry of Culture. Par-
ticipants were asked to describe what
model of arts collective they would like
to see, what services it would offer and
what the next steps are in establishing
the arts collective model. Participants
strongly agreed with the development of
many of the recommendations already
outlined in the Huron County Cultural
Plan including: the establishment of a
central database and website with event
calendar dedicated to promoting all arts,
culture and heritage assets in the Coun-
ty; the publication of a cultural and heri-
tage newsletter; and the creation of net-
working and professional development
opportunities for the sector.
The Symposium discussion also re-
vealed that a majority of participants

believe it is crucial that the County of
Huron establish a link between the sec-
tor and municipal government through
the creation of a permanent cultural staff
position that would be tasked to work di-
rectly with the arts, culture and heritage
sector on new initiatives and projects.
The future of arts, culture and heri-
tage in Huron County is looking bright!
Bringing various groups and individuals
from all sectors of the cultural commu-
nity was an important step in taking a
collective approach for the continued
development of new initiatives and rep-
resentation for arts and culture in Huron
County and provided a forum to discuss
how arts and culture contributes to the
local economy and quality of life for
residents of Huron County.
