Giving the gift of giving. It's a concept that takes get-
ting used to according to Mark Aitken, one of the orga-
nizers of the Global Giving Mall at North Street United
Church.
The mall operated on a simple concept. A gift given in
Goderich can make a difference worldwide.
"We want to get the word out about global thinking," he
said. "How can we really act and think globally?"
Whether it was fair trade coffee, buying bricks for
schools through. the Friends of
the Orphans, or through orga-
nizations like Oxfam or Unicef,
purchases made on North Street
this weekend will be making a
difference in the lives of third -
world people for a lifetime.
"It's alternate giving," Aitken
said. 'Thinking outside the box."
Many of the gifts came with
matching or multiplied contribu-
1 1 tions from charitable organiza-
tions, adding to the already gen-
erous nature of the gifts -in-kind.
Aitken said once a person gets
the idea of giving for somebody
instead of giving to them, a little
gift can be a powerful thing.
It is a ripple effect, and week -

f
end merchants like Lianti Mueller know well how a little
here can go a long way somewhere else.
Mueller makes and sells necklaces. Those necklaces are
sold and the money goes to the Rotary Share Your Knowl-
edge sewing program.
The program offers Zambian women courses in sewing,
as well as their own sewing equipment.
What the women produce, they sell and in tum, create
more opportunity for themselves and better lives for their
families.
Mueller, who has visited one such community in Zam-
bia, said some of the earlier graduating women have be-
gun making school uniforms and are now able to teach and
etnploy others who have taken the sewing courses.
"They are so excited about what they do," she said.
"They never would have thought this could happen."
To shoppers like Elaine Blair, the mall provided a chance
to get some Christmas shopping taken care of.
"It's a great concept," she said. "It's just sharing a lit-
tle."
ttle"
Aitken said people in general are becoming more and
more aware of their power to make a difference in the
world, though it is easy to overlook in a safe and prosper-
ous country.
He added the global giving mall provided a convenient
place for shopping, not only for Christmas, but for genera-
tions.
The mall ran Saturday and Sunday at the church, and
provided many gifts for those at home and abroad.
