Library study will have to
wait as town hones to-do list
From page 1.
this was a workable figure or if
the ongoing funding was a bit
steep.
"That's a little high," he said.
"I don't like to see the number
until I hear the plan."
Representatives from the
YMCA replied the cost of
general upkeep and slight
improvements would be
in the $1 million range by
2013.
The figure takes into ac-
count not only the Maitland
Recreation Centre, but the
Memorial Arena, Agricul-
tural Park, the beach front
and soccer fields.
Councillors Ray Hurd
and David Yates both ex-
pressed their support for
the $400,000 annually,
with Yates adding that
even one major capital
purchase can eat up most
of the potentially -allocat-
ed amount.
"Right here (in the Me-
morial Arena) we have a
zamboni that's going to
be $80 to $85,000," he
said. "That eats it up right
there."
Council decided to keep
the payment amount and
its high priority on their
to-do list.
LIBRARY
The request for a feasi-
bility study on the third
floor of the Goderich Pub-
lic Library will again have
to wait, as the new town
hall will provide storage
for files currently housed
in the library mezanine,
freeing up space in the
public building.
Councillor Heather Ly-
ons asked if the study
couldn't still be done to
better utilize the space at
the library.
"We have a building that
isn't being fully used," she
said.
McCabe said any study
done now just means more
money spent later, a senti-
ment echoed by Councillor
Ray Hurd.
"It begs to agree that no
further action be taken,"
he said.

AIRPORT MUSEUM
The creation of museum space
at the Sky Harbour Airport will
be up to the county to decide, as
the town rethinks its involvement
in the municipal airport.
"Building cultural assest is
good for all of us," said Deputy -
Mayor John Grace.
Coun. David Yates said the
creation of museum space is un-
realistic for the airport terminal
building, however council dis-
cussed leasing the building to the
county or to neighbouring Ash-
fied-Colborne-Wawanosh, as the
museum space would showcase
Port Albert material.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt said the
town should not act until hearing
from Huron County.
"We're not leading the parade
here," he said. "Let's wait for the
county."
ET CETERA
A memorandum of understand-
ing is in the works between the
town and the Goderich Little
Theatre, dictating the roles of
both organizations as the push
for a town cultural centre enters
its next phase.
Progress has been made over
the past year to bring the CPR
station on the Goderich water-
front up to code, and requests
.for proposals will be going out
to find private investors for the
building.
A look into contracting out
costs for Goderich's works and
cemetery maintanence positions
met with a dead end, as the mon-
ey saved is not significant enough
to prompt major change.
Downtown revitalization will
continue to be on the docket, but
no action will be taken as there
are no senior government funds
to offset any major work.
Development of Victoria Park
has plateaued with the 2008 addi-
tion of the splash pad and wash-
rooms, and council deemed no
further work needed to be done.
However, there could be an in-
crease of traffic this summer, as
the YMCA looks to hold some
of their summer children's pro-
gramming in the park.
