Sailors downed by Hawks, Barons
Osrard Crscas
signal -star staff
The Goderich Jr. 'C' Sailors had a rough weekend on
the ice, with a couple big upsets at home and away.
In Friday's away -game against the Walkerton Hawks,
the Sailors lost 9-2.
It was an evenly -spread out assault by the Hawks,
scoring three goals each period.
Walkerton's David Jones scored a pair of goals. in the
game, while defenceman Trevor Smith got three assists
in the first period.
It wasn't until the third when the Sailors came to life,
led by Tyler Million off Thomas Bedour less than three
minutes in.
The Hawks, however, answered back hard and
dashed all hopes of a Sailors' comeback with three
more goals.
Brandon Dykxhoorn book -ended the period for the
Sailors on a powerplay goal assisted by Will Kelly.
Goaltending was split for the night between Shawn
Gethke and Sheldon Reid. Gethke stopped 20 of 25,
while Reid blocked 10 of 14 shots on net.
Walkerton's Dan Trombley stymied 25 of 27 Sailor
attempts.
However, the Sailors did maintain cooler heads, tak-
ing only three penalties for the night, all of them high
sticking.
In Saturday's at-home match, the Sailors spent near-
ly as much time in the box as they did on the ice.
Goderich racked up a staggering 50 penalty minutes
on 16 infractions during their 7-3 loss to Hanover.
It was a slow -starter for the home team, who saw Ha-
nover jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period,
however Brett McGuiness and Shawn McColl each put
one marker up for the Sailors, assisted by Jamie Miller
and Matt McClinchey.
Just over four minutes into the second, Tyler Durst
brought the game to within a point with help from
Thomas Bedour, however, it was the last time the Sail-
ors would find the back of the Bardns' net.
A rash of misconduct penalties carried over into the
third period to keep the Sailors down, including 21
minutes from Durst alone.
Hanover's Dave Clement stopped 22 shots from the
Sailors, while Barons' centremen Rob Hellyer and An-
drew Boyle nabbed three points each.

Goderich Sailors' Jamie Miller tries to stuff one
past Hanover goaltender Dave Clement Saturday
night at the Maitland Recreation Centre.
Shawn Gethke stopped 22 of 29 in the effort.
Meanwhile, in the Western Junior 'C' League, God-
erich is only one point ahead of last place Mount For-
est, with a record of 3-10-0 in the regular season.
Hanover leads the league in points with 21, however
the Walkerton Hawks have just as many wins after 11
games, as opposed to the Barons' 16.
Goderich heads to Mount Forest this Friday before
coming back home to host the Ironmen Saturday, No-
vember 14 at 8:30 p.m. at the Maitland Recreation
Centre.
Peewees have action -packed weekend
An action -packed game against the Listowel Cy-
clones ended in a tie for the Pee Wee Rep Sailors on
Sunday, November 8. Fast end-to-end action in the
first period resulted in two Listowel goals, but Evan
Guest, assisted by Ian Simpson and Ethan Lajeunesse,
closed the gap with a short-handed goal to make it 2
- 1 Listowel.
The second period saw some great saves
by Sailor net -minder, Jordan Johnson, but
Listowel managed to squeeze another in to
make it a 3 - 1 game.
The Sailors stepped it up a notch in' the
third period, starting with an impressive
goal by Simpson, assisted by Guest and
Mason Nurse. A few minutes later, Lajeu-
nesse and Jarred Bakker passed the puck
to Stephen De Jager who scored a wrap-
around goal.
Less than a minute later, the Cyclones
gave one up to De Jager who scored once
more on the breakaway, putting Goderich
up4-3.
