Aside from a gorgeous weekend with
double-digit temperatures and bright, sunny
skies, Goderich is getting set for the arrival
of seasonal snow and along with it, the man
in red.
He's set to touch down in Goderich just in
time to take part in the annual Santa Claus
Parade, this year taking place on Saturday,
November 21.
"The jolly old elf himself
is going to be here again,"
said Goderich's special
events coordinator Wanda
Keith.
She's been hard at work
setting the wheels in motion
for the upcoming kick-off
of the Festival of Lights, the
official start to the holiday
season.
Its theme this year is a
Victorian Christmas, some-
thing Keith says many of
the parade's more than 40
entries so far have been incorporating.
"We're pleased with the number of entries
we've got ... People seem to be putting a lot
of thought into the theme, and are getting
into the spirit of things that way," she said.
In 2008, the parade included approximate-
ly 60 entries. This year, Keith said specta-
tors can look forward to classic favorites,
like the Goderich Fire Department, dancers,
horses, and seasonal music.
The parade will begin at 7:15 p.m., and
will follow a backwards route around the
downtown core's normal traffic flow. The
procession will lead off from Wellington
Street, make its way up West Street, then
clockwise around The Square before dis-
persing off of Montreal Street.
The Goderich Laketown Band will set the
tone of the evening beginning at 6 p.m. with
songs of the season, while the 4th Goderich
Scouts begin serving up hot chocolate at
6:50 p.m. Spectators are welcome to bring
insulated travel mugs. At 7 p.m., the holi-
day lights will be set ablaze. Also on hand
during the parade, the Salvation Army and
Goderich Wal Mart will be collecting good
tidings and non-perishable food items, and
Canada Post will have its
holiday helpers out col-
lecting letters to Santa.
CANDLELIT SERVICE
MARKS START TO
FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
While Saturday's parade
signals the first visit from
Saint Nick, the Festival
of Lights begins Friday,
Nov. 20 in Courthouse
Park when community
members are invited to

dedication and Angel,

The Festival of Lights runs
until early January each year,
and so includes more than 15
community events. Keep your

Tree ceremonies.
"We're hoping to get more people out to
the service on Friday night," said Keith. "It's
a nice way to start the festival."
The tree lighting ceremonies are a time for
the community- to gather and celebrate the
lives of members no longer with us, Keith
said. The short itinerary includes song, ci-
der, poems, and a reading of the Angel Tree
list, which includes the names of children of
all ages who have passed on.
"There is some sadness, but we're really
celebrating those people who aren't with us
in the same way anymore," Keith said.
Battery-operated candles and tree orna-
ments are for sale on-site, and sold at cost.
The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.
