Nelson Street affordable housing
complex getting community support
Gerard Crocus
signal -star staff
Things are taking shape at the Maple Tree housing
complex at 45 Nelson Street, as a mix of profession-
als and volunteers are coming together to complete the
project.
Exterior work is nearly complete on the building, and
workers are preparing to get the rest completed before
winter hits.
Captain Krista Andrews of the Salvation Army is part
of the Maple Tree board and said volunteer help has
been amazing so far.
Trinity Christian Reform Church of Goderich recent-
ly rolled up their sleeves to help, with volunteers from
the church giving their time putting siding on. Andrews
said Maple Tree is very thankful of the volunteer effort,
and the results.
"It looks wonderful," she said. "A big thank -you goes
out to the Christian Reform Church."
The project began as a collaboration between faith
groups, led by the Salvation Army and Bethel Pente-
costal churches. After getting the appropriate zoning
from the town and county, work began on the project.
Goderich has the greatest need for affordable housing in
the County, and highest waiting list.
The project funding is split between the federal, pro-
vincial and county governments, and will see the cre-
ation of 12 new units available - a mix of one, two and
three-bedroom apartments.
There are approximately 30 people on the waiting
list, with a mix of singles and families.
Andrews said Maple Tree is still accepting calls for
the waiting list, and the application process will begin
soon. The location of the build in Huron County, she
said, reflects studies that show Goderich is in great
need.
"Goderich has the highest waiting list for social hous-
ing," she said. "And the biggest part of that is singles
looking for a one -bedroom apartment"
All the 12 apartments have been framed,
wired and are in the process of being insu-
lated and drywalled.
Andrews said once that is done, Maple
Tree will be looking for volunteers for jobs
like painting, installing fixtures like blinds
and cleanup.
"We still need skilled volunteers," she said.
"People who just want to come help out."
Earlier in the year, Maple Tree put out
the call for individuals or groups to sponsor
apartments for appliances. As a result, she
said two church groups have stepped up to
the call, as have two youth, Erin Hardman
and Mark Randall, who were raising money
for mission trips of their own.
Andrews said potential applicants need to
know this is affordable housing - not geared
to income. The rent is set by the county while
geared to income rent fluctuates.
"This is a set rate," she said. "Some people
are confused on what this is."
Meanwhile, she said the cooperation from
the federal, provincial and county govern-
ments has been "wonderful," adding the
town of Goderich has been more than a will-
ing participant through the whole process as
well.
Anyone who wants more information
about the waiting list or application process
is invited to call Maple Tree at 519-612-
