Members of the GDCI Global Village club have re- cently put their cause up as part of the Aviva Community Fund online competition. Aviva, a Canadian Insurance company, has allotted $500,000 to fund projects that will be judged on community impact, likelihood of success, longevity and sustainability, originality and submission quality. "Through the competition, we're hoping to raise money for a new sound system and lighting for our West Gym," said Global Village member Bailey Burgsma. According to the group, students toward the back of their largest gym have trouble hearing during assemblies, presentations and performances. They say they would also like to install a new and up-to-date lighting scheme that will provide better output while saving in energy us- age. "For the competition, we've written up a summary on the web that states what our goal is and how the current lights and sound have been deteriorating," said Shelby Clark. Anyone registered with the Aviva Community Fund can vote for GDCI (along with other ideas submitted to the fund), by visiting www.avivacommunityfund.org. The top 25 ideas will move on to the judging phase, when a team of impartial judges will score the ideas, and the highest ranked ideas will be funded. With just two votes on Monday, GDCI needs to do a lot of catching up before the end of phase one. Simply visit the competi- tion web site, register with an email address and search for Goderich. You can return every day and cast your vote. The club has also created a Facebook page that they hope will encourage their peers at GDCI to join the cause. "We're really trying to promote it," Clark said. "It's going to benefit everyone who visits our gym. Hopefully, every- one will get our message and go on the site to vote." The first phase comes to a close Nov. 29, when the top submis- sions will move on for phase two voting from Dec. 2 to 16. The final round with impartial judging will take place from Dec. 17 through Jan. 25, after which the top ideas will receive funding. Team headed to Barbados marathon From page 43 with lupus type arthritis. Devastated, the Holmesville-area resident and avid hiker thought her active lifestyle was over. In 2005, 75 per cent of Huron County resi- dents reported having at least one long-term chronic condition diagnosed by a health pro- fessional, according to Huron County Health Unit statistics. Arthritis/rheumatism was the most common self-reported chronic health condition in Huron County, followed by. high blood pressure. In the 12 years since Joan's diagnosis, the mother of four has learned to live with an ad- justed lifestyle that often is accompanied by joint pain. It's all part of the reason her goal to walk the half marathon is an important and courageous one to meet. That's why her fam- ily — husband Bill, sons Jim and Greg and daughters Shelley and Kristen — will join her every step of the way to help stamp out the sometimes debilitating effects through re- search and treatment by the Canadian Arthri- tis Society and its Joints In Motion program. The troupe of six has signed on to take part in the year-end marathon as a fundraising ini- tiative of Joints In Motion. The program al- lows Joints In Motion team members to com- plete a marathon, half marathon, trek, walk or other event at destinations around the world while raising money to fight arthritis. Each member is required to raise $5,200 for research. But while their requirement to take part collectively sits at $31,200, Joan has upped the ante. "I raised our family goal to $50,000," she said.
