The Pirates came out of the gate strong, scoring four goals before Milverton even made it to the board. The first period saw a power -play goal scored by Matt MacPhee, assisted by Dave Meriam and Kyle Hamilton, as well as a goal scored by James Gartshore, assisted by MacPhee and Scott Jamieson. Second period action saw two more pow- er -play goals for the pirates, one scored by Sean Burton, and another from MacPhee. Scott Austin also put in an even strength goal to bring the Pirates' total to five. Assists were netted by Meriam (2), Jamieson, Hamilton, and Burton. Milverton was not about to go down quiet- ly, however, as the Pirates faced a team with renewed vigor during the third. The Pirates entered the last period up 5-1, but two power -play goals and one even - strength goal were almost enough to force an overtime. The Pirates have a big weekend ahead, ac - Junior Vikes sitting second in hoops The Goderich District Collegiate Insti- tute junior girls basketball team is enjoy- ing a stellar season on the court this year, sitting second place behind juggernaut St. Mike's of Stratford. The Vikings suffered their only loss of the season last week at the hands of the Warriors, keeping it close at 32-36. Jayme Austin downed 11 points for the Vikings in the effort, with Hayley Bowler - Cooke netting seven. The Vikings started slow in the first half, being outscored 23-13 after the sec- ond quarter. The girls rebounded in the third quarter, though the clock ran out on a Viking comeback, with the juniors net- ting 19 points to St. Mike's 13. The Vikings also took on St. Marys' ju- nior team, walking away with a 42-26 win. Bowler -Cooke led the scoresheet with 15, followed by Lauren Dietrich with eight. St. Mike's is undefeated heading into playoffs, while Central Huron has yet to win a game. St. Anne's is tied for third with Strat- ford Central syith six wins, four losses in junior play. Meanwhile, there was no contest in . the senior girls' October 28 matchup against St. Mike's. The Vikes barely made a notch on the scoresheet, with just 10 points to show after four quarters of hard -played bas- ketball. St. Mike's dominated the match, 55-10. Moniek Geene racked up half the points for the Vikings. • The senior Vikes are sitting middle -of - the -pack right now with 10 points for the season. F.E. Madill is at 12 points while Strat- ford Central continues to dominate the league at 18 points. Both Stratford North- western and St. Mike's share second place with 14 points. Meanwhile, the Eagles have four points for the season, with narrow wins against Mitchell (38-34) and Listowell (50-49). Playoffs begin today, November 4, with quarterfinal action between the senior Vikes and F.E. Madill in Wingham. The Juniors head straight to the semis, playing the winner of Stratford Central and North- western Nov. 9. cording to general manager Trevor Bazinet. "We've got two road games versus Monk - ton and Thedford," he said. It will be the first time that the Pirates have faced off versus Monkton this year, and the second against Thedford, having narrowly lost to the DirtyDogs 8-6 in October.
